My brother the militant atheist (VANITY)

My brother and I have been going back and forth over the last few years, his atheism has really taken a sharp curve into aggravating territory. I got this message from him, and I'm trying to let my anger subside before I respond. I'm curious what you would say:
The only two things you should ever worry about getting married to each other are big government and big religion. While many are very vocally opposed to "redefining marriage" (even, though there are more than one definition of marriage if you bother to look in a dictionary) they don't realize that, in the process, they are redefining the word "liberty". Anyone who believes that big government is too intrusive on their personal lives, but also believes that using religion to dictate the liberty of others isn't intrusive, needs to look in a mirror... for there they will most definitely find the definition of "hypocrite".

I do, too, but you're missing the point that I'm being called a hypocrite for letting a "imagined" supreme being for dictating how I live my life as well.

You are only being a hypocrite if you want the government to mandate that everyone live their lives according to what your religion says at the point of a gun/edge of a sword. That leads to a Muzzie-like theocracy. No real conservative wants that (I would hope).

Thank you. I would add that it's not just that atheists are oblivious to the fact that their moral opinions have been molded and shaped by Christianity. There's no doubt of that fact, oblivious as some of them are to it. Sometimes I happen to agree with particular moral opinions of atheists. The problem is not just what the pragmatic effect of particular moral opinions of atheists has been (as if, as you have pointed out, mountains of dead bodies from atheist governments were not enough!) The insurmountable philosophical problem atheists have is that philosophically they cannot account for or justify morality itself, or any other type of abstract, universal invariants on which they rely such as the laws logic or the laws of nature. They cannot account for human life.

Cordially,

Exactly. By the principles of their own theory, there is no purpose to morality.
