Ginger Rogers doesnt appear in black-face in this movie. It is just a bad reproduction of the original photo.
The gentlemen have written and Mr. Wilder has directed a bountiful comedy-romance.
Mr. Crowther gives two thumbs up to Billy Wilders directing debut.

I was channel surfing a few months ago and caught this on TCM. It was a cute flick, and so was Ginger.
However, the critics were very forgiving in passing off a woman in her late 20’s as a teenager.

This is one of our favorite movies! Recorded it on dvd and watch it every once in awhile. I am sure the critics panned it at the time (any movie the critics pan will usually be good!) for the reason you said. But for us that is part of the cute part of the movie, seeing how they try to make up Ginger Rodgers like a young girl!
