"After nearly four decades of tearing down and restoring old log structures a Virginia man has seen a lot of history. When it came time for him and his new bride to restore one for themselves they had no idea just how much history they would uncover." ...In and and around an old cabin were Spanish coins, minnie balls, a spanish crossbow arrowhead and indian artifacts...(2 minute video)

Just be careful. If you know a Dr personally, perhaps s/he can look-up, or suggest to you some anatomy reference books, to determine the bones’ origin. But I think it’d require a DNA test of there are only fragments remaining.

Just be careful; oh, I already said that. Can’t say it enough, or your life could be turned upside down.

Have you had personal experience with this? I literally just got an email from my husband saying he already contacted the Coroner. We do not even know if they are human and he has contacted them, so now I am worried :(

I have no direct personal experience, but if they begin an investigation and in-depth excavation, it might get our of control. I’ve heard stories where multi-million dollar construction sites have been disrupted and indefinitely shut-down for the investigation/excavation. Let’s hope they’re just animal bones...

I'd be curious to know more, if there is any more to know that is. The coroner called tonight to talk to my husband, they said they'll be out tonight or tomorrow evening to evaluate the bones, but if they are human they will have to dig...problem of course is that it's under the crawlspace of our house so I don't know what that entails. I don't remember if I posted this earlier and am too lazy to flip back and look, but the Joseph Lawrence that owned our house is listed as "Ranger of the Frontier", apparently during the Revolutionary War they fought with the American Indians SO....if they are human remains, I have to wonder if they could even be something like trophy pieces, if they did that back then? :-/ Eek. Here's one link that also have a rubbing of the headstone:

Do you have a family attorney? If not, get one. If yes, notify him/her ASAP of what’s happening. I don’t know what the legalities of all this are, but you may have some rights and need to protect them.

I have someone in mind and am probably going to beg my husband to do this, his father died last week and was good friends with an attorney who had helped arrange and then deal with the will. When the coroner talked to my husband on the phone tonight, he said he would be out about 5:30 this evening. I am just worried IF they are human, the house will be possibly torn apart. I don’t know if that would happen, I can only guess that they would be able to obtain a search warrant to do so though? My husband didn’t think this through before contacting them and I’m just hoping it won’t bite us.

Sorry was busy over the weekend, someone from the coroner's office came Friday night to pick them up. I had told my husband what you had said and he scheduled an appointment with an attorney, however the appointment isn't until Friday (sigh). They said they were going to contact us on Saturday morning either way and did not. The guy actually said this would be the first time they would ever have to deal with something like this, if it is human bone, because as of now they have all tested out to be animal bones when reported. This seems odd, considering the area we are at is right near Gettysburg, but that is what he said. I am going to call them today if they don't report back.

I decided that I would start documenting everything online, including the history, and ended up registering a website that I'm in the process of updating with information. I figure it may be a good idea to do it before any type of excavation, if that happens. http://www.1760loghouse.com is the link if you're curious.

Hopefully, all are animal bones. If any are found to be human, and older from around Civil War era, you’ll have a “National Historical Site” problem on your hands. If they’re human, and even older, it could also be an excavation which would disrupt your lives. Hopefully, hopefully, hopefully, they’ll just be old animal-DNA tested bones, Gennie.

Beautiful website! I’ll follow your progress on it, but also pls keep me posted here on FR.

best wishes,
c_h

Great site! Thanks for posting.
If you are getting together a ping list, please put me on it.

Thank you, I will try. I actually posted some of those bone pics on the Anthropology section of Reddit, and of course...while it’s the Internet and anyone can say they are ANY occupation...there were some pretty detailed answers as to what type of human vertebrae they were :( so we’ll see!

Thank you! To be honest, I have no idea how to get a ping list together, I usually lurk on here and only occasionally post, heh.

Hi, just a quick update as we had to call and leave a message with the coroner last night. They said they’d get back to us Saturday morning, and so after not hearing anything my husband left a message on Thursday night. Guess we’ll see what they say!

Good. Document everything and keep your atty briefed on every development and step. Can you get ahold of him/her in case “things” move rapidly?

I am not sure and would have to ask my husband. We still haven't heard anything though the coroner did call yesterday while we were away and didn't leave a message. I do not know why they would not. I was looking up PA laws regarding this, and found this site - http://arrowheads.com/component/content/article/34-indian-burial-laws/106-pennsylvania-indian-burial-laws. Hopefully it's animal bones, because if they are human I guess the possibility exists that it could have been built over a burial ground which apparently would have special protection.
