The prevailing wisdom is that Gary Johnson would pull votes away from Romney. But I disagree. Johnson's libertarian philosophy is, in reality, quite attractive to a lot of libs, especially younger ones.
Johnson is strongly in favor of legalizing marijuana. I can see many college students, Occupy types, and gray-bearded aging 1960s hippies liking that message. And I think a lot of them, who you would normally expect to vote for Obama, will vote for Johnson.
I think Johnson being in the race could be a significant positive for the GOP.
Hoping Nadar runs again.
Isn’t Johnson also for counterfeiting marriage?
My thoughts on the subject of Gary Johnson is that he might do a little damage to Romney in NM, where it might not matter, and that he will be otherwise insignificant, one way or the other.
Any action that doesn’t support the ONLY candidate that can defeat Obama, is an action that SUPPORTS OBAMA!
If Obama wins, “don’t blame me, I voted for Johnson” (or Paul) ain’t gonna cut it. This election is existential.
Libertarians and Conservatives are joined at the Right Wing hip as Communists and Fascists are on the Left Wing—two shared core ideologies with the same goal but different tactics...
...Communism is Fascism with an international flavor while Libertarianism is Conservatism with an immoral one. Both of the first two seek totalitarian tyranny while the latter pair seek Constitutional primacy, individual liberty and personal responsibility...still rather than save America from an Obama second term of scorching the hopes and dreams of all of us, the Libertarians want America to be martyred for their pie in the sky unpragmatic delusions.
When only a few percentage points separate the anti-American fascist dream of Obama from the not Obama hopefully conservative promise of Mitt Romney, the Obama enabling Perot like benighted fantasies of the Libertarian Party may become the well placed end time small round that finally penetrates the once invulnerable cranium of American Freedom.
So drop the crap, the RP brainwashed Libertarians are in Obama’s camp plain and simple!
I’m strongly in favor of legalizing marijuana.
I’m even more strongly in favor of illegalizing Obama.
I hope disillusioned Dems of college age think Gary Johnson is the bee’s knees.
...do you seriously think that any sufficiently indoctrinated college age Democrat would vote for ANYONE who has faith in the Founders?!?!
Fascist Hate is their mantra and anything short of securing socialist tyranny in America is personal suicide bait.
Gary Johnson, if as planned (it has to be planned otherwise the man is an empirically proven fool) helps to reelect Obama Libertarians will be refused refuge in the patriot redoubts that will spring up in the next American revolution.
How’s life on Fantasy Island?
Libertarians also have an official NUT JOB foreign policy, and that appeals to the college libs also.
Libertarians: 2/3 radical liberals, 1/3 radical conservatives.
I heard Johnson the other night on NPR and he also supports extra constitutional judical activism such as Roe V Wade. The man came out as a full blown liberal on the issue of abortion. Johnston may have some positives but he is not a true libertarian he is a liberaltarian.
“If Obama could only vote for the Republican or Libertarian Party which would it be?”
The same applies to between the GOP and the Nazi, Communist or Pandas for Piece Party...
...cuz once they win any other party will be exterminated anyway...and their supporters dealt with as only a totalitarian bureaucracy with police power can do, especially as they address the lists of those they dislike from long ago.
Being even a lowly fascist bureaucrat means one can cause the torturing to death of even preschool acquaintances who hurt your feelings...the #1 Leftist motivation for the whole ideology.
Marx, Lenin, Stalin and Hitler were socially maladroit nerds and geeks and those who treated them as such suffered later the horrors of vengeful Hell.
Obama awaits the same opportunity and perhaps Gary will give him that as he later gets in line to get it.
Not quite correct. The “L”ibertarian Party has devolved into a three-legged stool of misanthropy:
1. Dope for all dopes ( I generally favor decriminalization of narcotics and ceasing the gubmint-growing “war on drugs,” but it is not a foundation for a political philosophy)
2. All war is bad (I generally condemn stupid war, but a ruthless war against a pagan existential threat is fine by me)
3. Queerness is a virtue (I have no desire to bring harm to behavioral deviants who leave me alone, but don’t tell me I have to validate their fetishes)
As a small “l” libertarian I know that limited government and self governance depends on a moral and virtuous populace. Large “L” libertarians are simply hedonists. As I often ask them, “Where on earth has hedonism built a beneficial society?”
This Libertarian knows what Communism is all about. I have had opportunities to talk, at length, with Russian and Cuban immigrants. I served in the military, both during Vietnam, and during the Cold War. Serving in a country that has a “constitutional monarchy”, I saw Socialism in operation, and the military juntas, as well. Gary Johnson has had no such experiences.
Gary Johnson has not had the experience of being next to a place of business that was blown up by Jihadists. I have.
I watched the Libertarian Party Convention, and saw the machinery nominate Gary Johnson.
This country is far beyond anything the Libertarian Party can offer, at this moment. It is either, The Constitution, Freedom, and a removal of those who have been moving us towards Communism, before it is too late, or we, as the United States of record, dies.
I took an Oath, and i state for the record, “Not on my watch!”
They(social lefty libertarians, anarchists, white free college mob, druggies) did vote for Bammy first time. Some will vote for him again, but most won’t. They will not vote for a Republican.
Yes, Johnson will take away more Obama voters than Romney voters...which will be bad news for Obama
Surprised to see so many still adhere to the “Third Party Candidates Cost The GOP Presidential Elections” Myth...when there is no real statistical evidence to prove that. Running a Non-Conservative costs GOP Presidential elections...not some 3d Party candidate
Zero restrictions on any and all abortion, is the Libertarian position.
It isn’t just drugs they want, it is ending all restraints on advertising those drugs, all restraints on abortion, and prostitution, they want to fully open the borders and end the INS and the Border Patrol, and remove anything to do with treating homosexuality different.
