Ocoee family says officer shot, killed pet

OCOEE, Fla. - A Central Florida family is demanding justice after their pet dog was shot and killed by a police officer.

Jackie and Mitch Schutt said an Ocoee police officer knocked on their front door on Sept. 18 to return an ID, but when Jackie opened the door, her dogs ran out to the porch and, she said, the unthinkable happened.

"The officer just pulled out his gun and shot her three times while I had a hold of her," said Jackie Schutt.

The Schutts say bullet fragments struck their front door right where their 9-year-old and 6-year-old children were standing.

Ocoee police Lt. Stephen McCosker said the officer involved is a veteran who's been on the force for more than 10 years. Lt. McCosker also said the officer also took a few days of medical leave to recover from the bite.

Local 6's legal expert Luis Calderon said officers have the right to come onto someone's property and shoot and kill a dog, but only if the officer has reason to believe they are in danger.

The Schutts say the Ocoee officer was never in danger and added he refused treatment from paramedics after the incident.

Anybody harming one of my dogs is a dead man walking. The only open questions are where, when, and how.

I read elsewhere that the officer was returning the ID after being at the house for a prior incident an hour earlier. Just wonder if it had any bearing on this?

Cop almost hit two kids.

Cop should be fired and sued into living under a bridge out of a shopping cart.

Cops shoot too many dogs.

BTW, a little bite that this jagoff refused treatment for. he just wanted to shoot something and knew he’d get away with it. Its high time we started shooting back. They’re the enemy.

End of story

At least he had the dog to shoot and didn't have to shoot the lady. That is why every household should have a dog, to give the police something they can shoot to avoid them having to shoot one of the kids or Mom or Pop.

I put a "satire" tag on it then thought better of it. With every passing incident it is getting more real and matter-of-course.

On my property. I’m in control. You threaten my dog or anything or anybody that I care about...your last thought will be amazement at your lack of understanding about personal freedom and personal property.

Just wonder if it had any bearing on this?

If that's true then it might have.

I had a dog once that regularly bit at the heels of a friend who came to the house. He never did this to anyone else. It just so happened that this friend was a meter reader who threw rocks at dogs.

Dogs have a sixth sense for things like that. And in this case the dog obviously had this officer pegged as potential trouble. The dog turned out to be right by paying for it with his life.

If the dog actually bit, I would tend to side with the officer and say it was a good shoot.

If the dog did not actually bite, then the officer is simply engaging in the now-common game, Plinkadog, and needs to get taken down hard.

That is an excellent point. The first line of defense against runaway cops.

Oh, sure, butter me up with monkey love, just as I'm about to mess you up on puppies.

(Sigh)

Okay, you are on, and your strategic FR chess moves are devastating.

Signing off the discussion...
