Akin, McCaskill both courting Republicans in Mo.

JEFFERSON CITY, Mo. (AP) — His spot on the ballot now guaranteed, Missouri Senate candidate Todd Akin began rebuilding support Wednesday among fellow Republicans who shunned him after a remark about "legitimate rape" while Democratic Sen. Claire McCaskill honed an election strategy that will use Akin's own words to portray him as an extremist.

Akin won a pair of high-profile Republican endorsements Wednesday from former presidential candidate Rick Santorum and tea party favorite Sen. Jim DeMint. Perhaps just as importantly, the National Republican Senatorial Committee — which had pulled millions of dollars of planned advertising after Akin's remark — said Wednesday that it hopes Akin wins and cracked open the possibility of again getting involved in the Missouri campaign.

While Akin attempts to shore up support among the Republican base, McCaskill is incorporating Akin's rape comments into a strategy courting politically independent voters and more moderate Republicans. In the coming days, for example, she plans to roll out a "Republicans for Claire" initiative featuring individuals such as Kansas City businessman Warren Erdman, who once served as chief of staff to former Republican Sen. Kit Bond.

I guess we would have been just as well off if Harriet Woods had unseated Danforth 30 years ago.

John C Danforth just announced his support for Barack Obama, Harry Reid and Nancy Pelosi.

“’Republicans for Claire’ campaign”

Just as effective as a recruiting campaign of “Chickens in Support of Col. Sanders.”

ObamaClaire is even dumber than I thought, and I had her pegged with an IQ around 83.

And John C. Danforth once again proves he’s cut from the same cloth as Bill Frist, Arlen Specter, and Lisa Murkowski. That he could be a Republican means that label doesn’t tell you very much.

How did Danforth get the nickname “Panama John”? Does his family still own Ralstoin-Purina? People in MO at one time would fight you over him, but they rejected him in 1970.

Was he called “Panama John” because he could have joined with William F. Buckley, Jr., John Wayne, and Howard Baker in the Panama Canal giveway?

I had forgotten about Frist; I don’t think he did put TN first, but people there never knew.

Judging from the vicious attacks on Akin in this forum over the past few weeks, one must conclude that a number of Freepers will be joining Republicans for Claire.
