10. Admiral James Stockdale seems confused
9. Vice President Al Gore fails to intimidate
8. Governor Rick Perry fumbles
7. Candidate Christine O'Donnell is stumped
6. Rep. Dennis Kucinich sees a UFO
5. Atty. Gen. Patricia Madrid chokes
4. Governor Jan Brewer freezes
3. President Gerald Ford seems clueless
2. Senator Dan Quayle gets slammed
1. Governor Rick Perry forgets
Some more interesting points: President Ford's debate fail about the Soviets not dominating Eastern Europe was even worse than I remembered. He had a chance to extricate himself but then went on to make it WORSE by proclaiming that the various nations of Eastern Europe didn't consider themselves dominated by the Soviets.
Of course, Admiral Stockdale was one of the debate fails but I thought this video should have also included the part about him not hearing a question because he hadn't turned on his hearing aid. That was actually quite funny.
Al Gore was an even bigger jerk than I had remembered. Yes, I did remember that he invaded Bush's space on stage but I forgot just how close he got to Bush.
Quayle's fail was could have been avoided. In fact his debate aides begged him not to compare himself to JFK because Bentsen was waiting for that. Quayle agreed not to do so but disregarded his promise and made the comparison and you can see that Bentsen was just waiting to pounce.
Finally, I never saw the video of Patricia Madrid of NM choke before so that was quite interesting to watch. She was toast in that election as soon as she finished choking. That might have been the funniest for me because I never saw it before.
That was a hoot, Madrid had no chance after that.
Here’s another gaffe from NM, Diane Denish (Rishardson’s LT. Gov) against Susana Martinez.

How can you omit Gov. Michael Dukakis seemingly having difficulty deciding whether seeing his wife raped was worthy of becoming excited or not?
I remember the Stockdale thing. He said something like “Am I here” or something. Laughed my @ss off because everyone was definitely ignoring him.
George H.W. Bush looked at his watch.
They must have had a good laugh over that debate in NM.
After that debate SNL did a skit with Perot driving him out into the woods and leaving him there.
I know the man has his fans, but the nomination didn't go to him, and it's not hard to see why.
That wasn't me. It was the video that left that out. Also left out was Richard Nixon turning down makeup for his debate because it wasn't "manly." Big mistake. His heavy beard shadow was quite prominent. After that he made sure he was thickly coated with makeup for all TV appearances.
Why did you not include Reagan’s “There you go again!” comment to Carter, or his comment to the moderator about his age, and then retorting “I’m not one to hold my opponent’s youth and inexperience against him.”
These are the classics! and should be number 1 and 2, IMHO.
Um... Look at the title of the video. What you cited were NOT debate fails.
mea culpa, however, as some half-assed defense, they were ‘fails’ for Carter and Mondale.....
A lot of people have forgotten that 16 years went by after the 1960 election until the next debate. Now they are so ingrained in the process that any candidate who tries to dodge them only hurts himself as Jimmy Carter learned. He dodged the first presidential debate so it was only between Ronald Reagan and John Anderson. The real loser of that debate was Carter so he was forced to debate Reagan shortly before the election.
“Rick Perry had me in stitches. Two entries!! And they were both gems”
Haha. They had me dying. Unfortunately I was an early Perry supporter. I gave up on him after 3 debate failures.
That Bush/Gore moment cracks me up every time I see it. That’s one reason I really loved W, his little Texas attitude.
They’re still running that clip on a local radio station.
Along with the one of Obama saying “My good friend, Diane Denish” and mangling the pronunciation of her last name.
The biggest problem is that the media are ready to pounce on Romney for even the slightest transgression. Unfortunately the questions will be picked to give Obama an advantage. Romney was the most consistent performer throughout the primary. I kept thinking that one of the non-Romneys would be able to knock him off the top spot. But he is very disciplined and was able to keep performing attack after attack. He has been through the fire; Obama really has not been tested in that way. My wiener dog could take on McCain and make a good showing.
