Orlando Cruz from San Juan, Puerto Rico and ranked the No4 featherweight by the World Boxing Organisation (WBO) has openly admitted his is "a proud, gay man".
He added: "I've been fighting for more than 24 years and as I continue my ascendant career I want to be true to myself. I want to try to be the best role model I can be for kids who might look into boxing as a sport and a professional career. I have and will always be a proud Puerto Rican. I have always been and always will be a proud, gay man." …

This could actually intimidate his opponents. They are going to be careful of any contact with open cuts on his face or elsewhere. That blood could very well be the carrier of a fatal disease. You can’t avoid getting some of his blood on your own boxing glove and you can’t avoid using your own boxing glove to protect your own face.

In most, if not all youth sports, when a kid is bloodied, he is removed, examined, bandaged, sanitized and the uniform changed before even being considered to participate further. And the caregivers wear rubber gloves most if not all the time.
