Hiking in the NJ Pine Barrens I often wondered about the zipping sound I would occasionally hear. Turned out it was Air Force Reserve firing off A10 rounds.
Down in Atlantic County there is another airfield that trains military cargo aircraft. Also Dover Delaware has air flight training.
These are sonic booms or the over enthusiastic pilot wagging wings for his family. Yes they do it. I saw one last week.

Sounds like something we’ve been experiencing in northern NJ in the last couple of years: Earthquakes.
These are small, very localized earthquakes. They feel different from California-style quakes. Most people describe them as sounding like a loud explosion.
In my town these quakes scared the heck out of people in a neighborhood near me a few weeks ago. Neighbors ran out of their houses, terrified that a bomb must have gone off. A short distance away, nobody noticed anything.
North Jersey had a really weird quake a couple of years ago. It felt and sounded like someone had switched on a gigantic vibrator right outside our house. Bzzzzzzzz. No kidding.
