(CNN) -- Philadelphia Eagles quarterback Michael Vick, who served 18 months in federal prison for bankrolling a deadly dogfighting ring, now has a dog.

"I understand the strong emotions by some people about our family's decision to care for a pet," he said in a statement released Thursday. "As a father, it is important to make sure my children develop a healthy relationship with animals."

He added that "our pet is well cared for and loved as a member of our family."

You can defend Vick all day. You can blame it all on the fact he was a poor child. However, let’s look at the facts. He may have been poor but he did have two working parents. He got a full scholarship to VT. He went to the NFL with a multi-million dollar contract. He participated in every aspect of dog fighting for over five years. In fact, he was living in a multi-million dollar mansion while doing these horrific deeds. He didn’t have “a change of heart”. He was arrested and prosecuted... that isn’t a change of heart. He’d still be doing this stuff today if he didn’t almost lose his precious NFL career. Any person that could do the things he did shouldn’t be anywhere near a dog. If he was truly “grateful” for a second chance, he wouldn’t have gotten a dog. That shows extreme arrogance and conceit. Have a nice day.

Prisons are full of folks who have “seen the light and the errors of their ways,” long enough to get parole and continue a life of crime.

Few are truly “reformed.”

"Mike Vick’s abuse of dogs was a cultural stupidity inculcated by a segment of society that thinks things like cock fighting and dog fighting is acceptable."

What a load of BULLSHIT! We can use your same reasoning to explain why there were always blacks selling other blacks to the white slave traders. They weren't wrong at all, they were just "inculcated by a segment of society" that things like that were OK.

Aside from what Vick did to his OWN dogs, people lost their pets to this asshole. He created a market for kidnapped kittens, cats, puppys and dogs he bought from other lowlife scum so his dogs could "train".

He's a POS. Stick him in the jungle where HE's part of the food chain.

I’m not going to hold what he did against him. He was raised in a certain fashion and wasn’t taught otherwise.

He is showing a willingness to repent and we have to allow him the chance to be repentent. That is part of the Christian ethic.

He says that the dog is well cared for and it probably is. He wants his children to be on a different path than he was on.

That’s good enough for me.

Excuse me! This man served his time in prison. It is a small person that would not give him another chance to prove himself to be a good citizen. I have needed a second chance in life, but I guess that you never have.

Vick should NEVER be allowed to own a dog again with his history of dog fighting.

I’m with momtothree and Slump Tester on this.

Anybody who can kill dogs in the horrific ways that he did and all for the fun of it may say he has changed but he hasn’t. He will always be capable of committing the same form of abuse.

Most alcoholics I know don’t want to ever drink again so they don’t put themselves in a position to do so. They stay out of bars and don’t spend time with folks who are drinking.

Vick making a issue of pointing out he didn’t get a pit bull is proof ha hasn’t lost the fever. I have seven dogs, one of which is a pit and he is as big a part of the family as the others. We and our guests don’t treat him any differently than we treat the other dogs. He is just a dog not a wreaking machine like the pit haters lie about them.

I personally still think Vick is a POS.

Very true...I support a group called “Best Friends”...they took in several of Vick’s dogs...a few had to be put down from injuries....most have been adopted out....

Vick proved himself a cruel person

All I see with this story is he's kissing up to the camera. Once scum, always scum.

Question, i thought as a term of his probation he was never allowed to have dogs?

“has shown that he indeed has had a change of heart.”

Frog snot.

The bad PR affected his multi-million dollar football paychecks.

You’re right..he’s not stupid.

He’s cleverly now cast himself as a spokesman for animal rights and ‘redeemed’ himself in the eyes of the blind.

He hasn’t donated a single dime to Dog Town, who took in his brutalized beasts and spent a fortune in time and money to rehab them.

Wayne Gacy should’ve been half as clever and become a children’s advocate.

No he hasn’t had any change of heart, he got caught. He needed rehabilitation so he could resume his football career.

what he did to dogs is unforgivable...forever. Just me though.

My dad was a long time prison guard.

He said “jailhouse conversions” were hardly ever worth the spit it took to claim them.

It’s all about the parole board.

Question, i thought as a term of his probation he was never allowed to have dogs? I found the info.. Vick could not own a dog during a three-year probationary period following his release from prison.
