Yankees' Derek Jeter fractures ankle, out for the year

The New York Yankees' World Series hopes may have just taken a hit, as shortstop Derek Jeter fractured his left ankle in game one of the American League Championship Series against the Detroit Tigers on Saturday night.

Jeter suffered the injury while fielding a ground ball in the top of the 12th inning, with New York trailing 5-4. He immediately went down in pain, staying face down momentarily.

I was wondering, during the series with the Orioles, if there was something more than a ankle sprain going on - I assume it was the same ankle as I didn’t see the game last night. Jeter is a gamer. Hope he recovers fully.

I was a lifelong Yankees fan, but became sick of the farce over the past decade. I rooted for the Orioles to beat them, and win the Series for Buck Showalter, who as Yankees manager through 1995 built that team and deserved to win the ring the following year. The Yankees are just the best team money can buy and I am tired of it. $190 million payroll vs. Baltimore's $75 million. that's 2.5 times. Absurd. And it also makes the team dull and listless, with aging superstars worth tens of millions apiece, who really could't care less if they won again. Team like the Nats and A's and Orioles are far more thrilling to watch, with young players exploding with enthusiasm.

However, I wish Jeter well, as he has always been a class act.

Do people actually root for the Yankees? I’ve never met a Yankee fan; even my New York friends are all Mets fans. Seems kind of like cheering for The Galactic Empire.

There are bangwagon fans and there is the true. My Dad was a fan since the age of five we are native New Yorkers. I remember him suffering through the late 60’s and much of the 70’s watching every game. I will be waiting for spring training 2013!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Exactly. Yankee fans are the spoiled children that always have to be on a winning team, and celebrate it like that contest wasn't rigged.

I have a begrudging amount of respect for Steinbrenner, because he openly admits that he does everything he can to retain his unfair institutional advantages... but Yankee fans are just annoying. (And yes, I was born and raised within 60 mi of Manhattan.)

When the top video games representing your sport have to give different goals for the player based on the team they select, you know the sport itself simply isn't an even playing field.

If someday the MLB has a salary cap, I MIGHT start watching again and believing that it's a fair game. Until then, there's no point in pretending that the Yankees are worth rooting for, other than as a traveling paid all-star team.

Tigers won in the 12th after Valverde blew a 4-0 lead in the 9th.

I haven’t forgotten Valverde’s 49 save record last year but he needs to go down to triple A for a while and get it back together

As a Red Sox fan I hate the Yankees, and hope they lose. However I have always had great respect for Jeter and the way he plays the game. Very sorry to see him get this sort of injury. You wonder if at his age this will be the end of his career.

You mean from 1965 to 1975, when they didn't make the playoffs? When they went 888-881 overall (winning more than they lost), and finishing 2nd, 3rd, or 4th (out of 10 teams in the division) in the last 6 of those 10 years... OH YOU POOR BABIES!!!

Since 1919, the Damn Yankees have won less than 70 games ONCE (67 in 1990). Try rooting for a REAL team someday, that knows the thrill of victory because they know actual suffering.

New York friends are all Mets fans...guess I am not one of your friends, I hate the METS. I recall when they came into being to fill the void left by the Dodgers and Giants leaving. Their fan base consisted of people who loved going to a carnaval i.e. watching fielders catch the ball of their heads.

I agree with one point made elsewhere, the Yanks became the best team that money can buy but even with their enormous salary, they cannot win today. It seems the era of buying talent at its peak and getting ready for a decline does not guarantee success. Perhaps it never was. Under the Yawky regime in Boston, no team paid more than did the Red Sox and no team achieved less on a dollar per dollar basis.

The Yankees of my memory were the US Steel, IBMs and Standard Oil of baseball....US Excellence. They dressed well, image was important, and they played sound baseball tactics and skills, no one caught the ball off their heads, no midget led off like the White Sox tried, no fireworks, no automatic baseball refills for the umps, just a great winning product on the field...the record says so.

My dad took me to Joe Dimaggio’s last game, I never forgot that and remained a Yankee fan, as he was, ever since.
