Dell will continue selling Windows 7

Not sure about this eight lark

Tinman Michael Dell has said that he will continue to flog Windows 7 machines after Windows 8 hits the shops. The move is being seen as a note of caution, because some analysts are not sure how successful Windows 8 will be.

Windows 7 is seen as a good stable operating system, particularly after the disaster that was Vista. Windows 7, which reached PCs in October of 2009, will be offered as an option to commercial and gaming customers. In fact Dell has said that it will offer Windows 7 as long as it is allowed to.

Apparently Dell is still moving business customers from XP to Windows 7. The company is continuing to recommend that customers migrate to Windows 7 and that those who need touch capabilities on PCs adopt Windows 8, a Dell spokesman said.

Both Windows 7 and 8 will be offered as options on the Latitude, OptiPlex and Precision brands, the company said.

I wonder if BestBuy is gonna give Mom and Pop and Grandpaw a Windows 7 option or if they’ll simply try to shove the totally dysfunctional Windows 8 down their throats? My guess is it will be throat-shoving all the way. I just so hope that Mom and Pop and Grandpaw will have the guts to take their crappy Windows 8 PCs back to BestBuy and demand a refund.

I was working on my mother’s computer - Windows 7 - and HATED it. Nothing was where it should be, it was hard to get at and hard to change settings.

I get new computers every two years or so - and stick with XP. The first thing I do when I get new OS is make look like the previous OS. It pisses me off that Microsoft changes stuff, just for the sake of change. Worse, they make it harder to find stuff, or to get at controls. They attempt to simplify things, and frustrate those of us who knew how to customize their previous OS into a useful format. Really, I truly hate them for that.

Oh, and IE9 stinks on ice, too.

Speaking only for myself as a professional who sits at the computer all day, I don’t want an operating system that is predicated on a touch-screen interface. I have a tablet and a smart phone, and I much prefer to use a mouse and keyboard over the touch screen interface for most of my day-to-day tasks.

Come over to the Force, Luke. I rebelled at Vista and went over to Linux. Absolutely no regrets.

IOW, Dell still has a lot of Windows 7 in a warehouse that haven’t sold.

There are lots of other places to buy your computer besides BestBuy. But who knows, gram & gramps might like Windows 8.

Businesses are always slow to adopt the latest thing, which in the case of Vista they were smart to totally blow it off.

I work on Linux every day - for servers. Very reliable.
Not so crazy about Linux GUIs like Xwindows, though. And, old as I am, I have adapted to GUIs and kind of like them (though I miss DOS 3.0 sometimes...).

I loathe and despise *nix. It's way too brittle, file-permissions and groups and how they need to be just so (and get messed up at the slightest provocation) as just one example. It's design philosophy I find repugnant, unsurprising considering C's philosophy*: no, everything is not a file.

*It could be worse, they could have gone with PHP's philosophy. {Where 'magic' automatic conversions fail, give no warning, and give absolutely incorrect results: "09" as an integer is 0.}

TOTALLY COMPUTER IGNORANT HERE!!!

When the hard drive in my XP puter fried I bought a new one...it had 8. Several times MS would up-date it and I would find my screen had changed. A much younger friend (grand child age) would come over and set things right. Then her family was going to move. She showed me how to go to a restore point and stop the automatic up-dates. Now I have a stack of 65 “important” up-dates and 4 optionals. When I read the up dates, I understand NOTHING, so they stay on the list. Since I use the computer only for photos, surfing, emails, shopping, occassional CC payments and access to my former employer’s (I’m retired) benefit center, how much am I tempting fate by continuing to ignore these up dates?

TIA

I know I said I have Windows 8, but it may be 7. It is the one that came out after XP but NOT Vista.

How can I tell if it’s 7 or 8?

Apparently Dell is still moving business customers from XP to Windows 7.

We are resisting. If it ain't broke don't fix it.

At home I see no need for no stinkin new operating system.
