"The controversy began when cheerleaders at Kountze High School painted the verses on their banners for football games. The Freedom From Religion Foundation complained that the signs violated the First Amendment that prohibits establishing a religion.
In September, the school district told the cheerleaders not to paint any more Bible verses on banners. The cheerleaders filed a lawsuit district court. The judge allowed the cheerleaders to keep making the banners until he announced his decision."

I grew up very near there, and when my parents retired, they built their little retirement home there.
From all I know, the people there are the salt of the earth.
There had to first be the obligatory Kabuki dance in court, of course, over whether this appeared to reflect an official school/gummit position or just student opinions.

I guarantee that this group of angry atheists would not have said a thing if these cheerleaders had dressed in burkas and scribbled verses from the Koran on their banners.
Was it Kountze or Sillsbee schools that ordered a cheerleader to cheer for a basketball player who had raped her? Just asking.
So, what happens when a muslim cheerleader wants to display satanic koranic verses too? Will that be allowed? I think there is an appropriate time and place for everything. Although displaying Bible verses at a football game hardly seems right venue, I’m not against their 1st Amendment rights to do so; I just wonder what happens when the eventual muslim shows up.

I started to include it, but it was pretty obvious & :-D I have confidence in my fellow San Antonians. (My vote is in there & from memory, the percentages haven’t changed much, just the number of voters)
@P-Marlowe, Oh, I won’t bet you. Then again, the fact that this happened probably means that this is a Christian community. It’s small- a little over 2100 people, I think.

@TexasRepublic, If we didn’t have Muslims here, that wouldn’t be a problem, would it? Everybody has their thing that is foremost in their heart. Allowing those who don’t believe in God, hate Christians, & hate America to remove God from our schools & our public spaces is mine. I believe we wouldn’t have had the pervasiveness of homosexuality, promiscuity, & abortion that we see today if that hadn’t happened.

I’m sure this isn’t the last anyone will hear of it, but it is enough for now. When the SPLC takes it to the next court (& they will), I hope that people will
step up- unlike when we lost this right in the first place.

In a heavily wooded part of the state called the Big Thicket, Kountze is an old-fashioned town of 2,100 with a history of religious tolerance. In the early 1990s, residents elected their first black mayor, Charles Bilal, a Muslim. The majority white, Christian voters made Mr. Bilal the first Muslim mayor in the United States.

From my own experiences in East Texas, this does not surprise me. Less likely in my opinion however, would be for a town in a sharia-ruled country to elect a Christian mayor. Those folks are not known for being broadminded. I would hate for their mind-set to take over here.
