Stunned attendees at the State Fair of Texas witnessed the iconic Big Tex go up in flames Friday morning.

Some fabric that made up the towering structure's hand and sleeves could still be seen as firefighters gathered around the scorched area.

Big Tex's 75-gallon hat, 50-pound belt buckle and slow drawl -- "Howdy, folks!" -- have been greeting fair visitors since 1952. This year's fair, which closes Sunday, had been celebrating Big Tex's 60th birthday.

Like a rebuilt car engine, it will never be the same - the soul resides in the original. The face was the center of the creation, originally a giant Santa Clause, purchased in the early 60’s to become Big Tex. Tell me how they’re going to recapture THAT?!

We of the New Mexico Liberation Front claim responsibility, having sent Zozobra to do the deed.

Wow, much more manly, less metrosexual, in the early years.

A giant man was seen fleeing the scene on a giant blue ox and wielding an axe.

It was prolly self inflicted. Big Tex got tired of seeing OU kick the longhorn’s asses every year in football.

True story. Back during the height of JWP’s “No justice, no peace” protests, my spouse was in the Parkland Hospital cafeteria. A sweet little old black lady was ordering a hamburger.

“Can I get mustard on that?” she asks.
“Yes, ma’am. You sure can.” The cook answers.
“Well can I get cheese on that too?”
“Yes, ma’am. Anything you want.” He says sweetly.
She pauses for a minute, sort of confused. Then she asks the cook - serious as a heart attack - “Then why that man outside protestin’ the cafeter’a, hollerin’ ‘bout ‘No mustard, no cheese!’ “

This is really sad for Texans. Big Tex has been an icon of the state fair for as long as I can remember and each year he gets a new “outfit”.

I sincerely hope that fair officials will not overreact and decide to “retire” Big Tex because of this.
