The Milwaukee police officer whose gun went off in Southrige Mall last year has pleaded guilty to disorderly conduct.
Michael Edwards, 46, was originally charged with endangering safety by use of a deadly weapon but pleaded guilty Wednesday to the reduced charge of disorderly conduct.
The gunfire at the mall happened Nov. 2. Edwards told Greendale police he was was at Auntie Anne's Pretzel with his fiancee when he reached into his left back pocket for his wallet and felt his gun slide down into his pants. He reached for the gun to stop it from sliding down and it discharged. The .40 caliber gun did not have a safety and had not been secured in a holster, according to the complaint.
The complaint also said that a witness, Amanda Studebaker, was at Auntie Annes Pretzel when she heard "a very loud bang and felt something hit the
back of her leg and then felt a stinging sensation."
Edwards also is the president of the Milwaukee Police Supervisors' Organization.
A sentencing hearing is scheduled for October 24.
GLOCK!
Unless it is a Glock.
Glocks were designed to be idiot proof, LOL. It didn’t work out that way.
Pistol Pheasant???
There are many things that can pull the trigger, besides your finger. In this case it could be the shirt or the pants. And even the finger - when the weapon fell down he had to fish for it under the belt, blindly. Carrying a firearm this way is pretty stupid anyway. But familiarity breeds contempt.
I personally don't touch Glocks. I understand that the safety is not the ultimate prevention of accidents. However nothing in the world is such an ultimate solution. If you eat an apple every day you still can die young. If you visit a doctor periodically for a check-up you still can die young. If you run a mile every day you still can die young. But when you combine all three, and more, then you'd be in a pretty good shape, if you ask me.
Also any security professional will say that the security must be always layered. A good neighborhood, a police station across the road, a fence, a dog, a solid door, a good lock, and a Mossberg behind that door all work together. That's why I insist on firearms with mechanical safeties. I do not trust them, but I use them because it is just possible that one day a mechanical safety proves to be very useful.
With regard to the instant bang with a Glock ... I am not the agent 007. My bias is to not shoot, rather than to shoot. But if one day we find ourselves in the Mad Max universe, the solution is simple. Flip the safety lever to "Fire" and leave it there. You can even weld it there if you want to :-) Glock just takes a useful function away from you, but does not add any.
Probably could have used a rooster picture to make that clearer. Not everyone knows that a male pheasant can also be referred to as a “cock”.
:)
OUCH!
Unless it is a Glock.
Clearly the Barney did not have it in a holster I described a glock in #3
and he pulled the trigger.
Poor stooge, only one positive thing can be said for him: at least he was carrying that Glock gen 4 with one in the chamber, which means the weapon was in ‘half’cocked’ and ready to fire position. The safety between his ears is the one that failed.
Perhaps he needs to review Israeli method i.e. C3.Military Police carry 1911s & M9s in C3
Guy like the one in the article wouldn’tbe open to learning since he was arrogant enough to carry a loaded, chambered Glock in his waistband without a holster. I’ve carried a 1911 like that on occasion, but the hammer safety was ‘up’ when the hammer was cocked. 1911s are safer than Glocks anyway ...
Thanks for your opinion; I’ll stick with my 25 years of fault-free experience with Glocks.
What a Maroon.
They make in pants waistline holsters to assist in proper carry of your firearm comfortably and safely.
I personally believe in having the safety on for my handguns.
On my Kimbers it’s easy to pull from the holster(Serpa) SAFELY.
As I grip the weapon and pull it from the holster my forefinger slaps into position on frame of the gun and my thumb flips back up to remove the safety.
I’ve gotten really good at with lots and lots of practice.
There are other methods for pulling your gun but, I like to have a system which ensures I can fight without hitting myself 1st.
When I carry from behind the waist band, IN A FRIGGIN HOLSTER!!, it’s the same process and as my gun clears my side, traveling forward and up, I flip the safety off and end in the position of my forefinger against the frame, ready to engage.
Again there are arguments that will say “when every millisecond counts, do it this way” but, I’m real weird about having a violent allergic reaction to shooting myself and bleeding to death.
“Im real weird about having a violent allergic reaction to shooting myself and bleeding to death.” Odd, someone told me you weren’t that good a shot. ... You know I’m joshin’ ya, right?
This Barney needs to placed on the
"Bow and Arrows" squad for
six months or a year.
They carry Glocks because they can’t shoot and the 1911 is too complicated...those high capacity magazines give them a sense of security but scare me to death. More chances for them to miss and hit me.
The POLICE continually tell we the people that there is NO Such Thing as an”accidental discharge” it is a voluntary act and this was and is Felony Reckless Endangerment causing injury or death, while using a firearm. anybody else would do every day of 5 years, He deserves at least 10.
