Glenwood Springs to Denver through Rocky Mountains

A really awesome ride is the White Pass & Yukon Route out of Skagway Alaska!
Breathtaking.
Wife and I took this train from Oceola, Iowa to Denver (overnight) arriving Denver just before noon.
Denver to Glenwood Springs was a slow pull uphill. We got off the train, checked into a hotel and went skiing that afternoon.
I’ve been on the White Pass train, it is beautiful!
The car trip via I 70 through Glenwood Canyon is awesome also.
Wanna take a train trip? I give you Durango to Silverton on the narrow gauge steam engine train. WOW.
That trip will curl your hair.

Use to ride it as a youngster. One should also take the narrow gauge from Silverton through the Alpine Loop....unforgettable
I did both of those in 2011 on a trip to California. The drive across Nevada is also awesome. If you have the guts and iron butt for it, the best way to make the Denver to CA trip is on a touring motorcycle.
done both and the SILVERTON out of durango. biking glenwood canyon is nice too. and hanging lake is a nice day trip hike from denver. i have to hike the south mountain fire memorial trail west of glenwood next year.

It needs a nice big steam engine pulling it.
We took a day trip to Silverton last year two days before Christmas. Such a wonderful place. Local church goers formed a musical band on the street playing Christmas carols and choir from one of the churches singing. Santa arrived on an old timey fire engine pulling a sleigh full of gifts for the kids and fruit baskets for the oldsters. Just lots and lots and lots of snow. In the midst of it all it started snowing again. Just like being at the North Pole. A slice of Heaven.
Great restaurant there called the Pickle Barrel. Wonderful food. Best day trip in a whole lot of years.
The I-70 through Glenwood Canyon is my favorite drive to date.
The best time of our trip was a guided Jeep tour through the mountains and old gold mines above Silverton.
We were actually staying in Pagosa Springs - another great area - and had driven to Durango to take my grandson back to the airport, returning to Pagosa via Silverton. Didn’t see much of Durango but wasn’t as impressive as other areas.
I’m sure Silverton looks a lot different with no snow. Go back when the snow is on the ground sometime if you can, providing the pass is open. All those adorable houses partially covered with snow look like they are made out of gingerbread with icing. Funniest thing we saw on the far edge of town were two directional signs on one sign post both pointing the same direction. One said “Ski Area”, the other said “Cemetery”.
We may just do that, we have been to the Rockies when snow was 4-5ft deep in the upper altitudes.
We were in Silverton in ‘94. Probably has changed since then.
I remember thinking they should ban cars. The old West experience would be complete.

We toured Mesa Verde while we were in the area. Fantastic.
A few years later my son got married in Ouray. Another beautiful place.

I love it. I doubt if the town has changed a whole lot. Everything that is there looks like it has been there for a while. Excellent city planners.
