dictionaries ad nauseam, incredibly slow computer | 12 November 2012 | Thursday's sub

In order that we might all raise the level of discourse and expand our language abilities, here is the daily post of "Word for the Day".

nugatory \NOO-guh-tor-ee; NYOO-\ , adjective
1. Trifling; insignificant; inconsequential.
2. Having no force; inoperative; ineffectual.

Example sentences:
Tygiel's forte as a historian is his eye for what may appear nugatory or marginal but, when focused upon, illuminates the temper of a given moment.
-- Roberto Gonzlez Echevarria, "From Ruth to Rotisserie", New York Times, July 2, 2000

Jacoby's offense was no offense -- or an error so nugatory as to demand no more than a one-sentence explanation.
-- Lance Morrow, "In Boston, a Foolish Consistency of Little Minds", Time, July 19, 2000

Socialism no longer restrains; trade unions do so much less than they did; moral inhibitions over the acquisition and display of wealth are nugatory.
-- John Lloyd, "If not socialism, what will persuade the rich willingly to pay more taxes to help the poor and preserve a decent society?", New Statesman, August 2, 1996

Etymology:
Nugatory comes from Latin nugatorius, from nugari, "to trifle," from nugae, "jests, trifles."

The sentence must, in some way, relate to the news of the day. The Review threads are linked for your edification. ;-)
Practice makes perfect.....post on....

The nugatory effort depicted above is a far cry from the shock and awe that marked the beginning of the end for Saddam.

Used in a sentence “the nugatory party” has failed the people” I hope we can all agree that from now on we will refer to the “republican party” as “the nugatory party”

Sorry to be late. I realize that my excuse is nugatory, but the ping did not come until 9:13 AM and my dental appointment was at 9:15 AM. Had I known that today’s appointment would be so brutal, I’d have come to class.

A+ for you. Chocolate is always worth a good grade. The classroom is very quiet today. The rain finally stopped here so I can go run after school gets out, although the temp has dropped 12 degrees since this morning.

It appears Obama thinks because
He was re-elected by a hair
He should raise all the taxes
And nobody will really care

I suppose he hasn’t figured out
He is only a jester and fool-
A nugatory Manchurian candidate
For those who seek to rule

Like Nixon, he has a mirror
That is magic, to show his best
And like Nixon in his 2nd term
His false image fails the test...
