My wife took this oath in May, 2006.

It does indeed, bring a lump to one’s throat...

IF this oath is correct, how the hell do we allow dual citizenship?

My daughter-in-law took this oath at a very patriotic ceremony. Bush was still President and his video to the new citizens was awesome.

I've wondered that myself. I took the oath in 2000 and have rejected any suggestion that I might have double nationality, or that my children are entitled to another nationality other than the US.

[I]entirely renounce and abjure all allegiance and fidelity to any foreign prince, potentate, state or sovereignty It doesn't get any clearer than that!

I proudly took this oath in 1968, after the required 5 years of being a legal resident. I was 19, and couldn’t wait to vote. In 1972 I registered as a Republican and voted for Nixon. I’ve been voting Republican ever since...and now I have so many doubts about voting Republican again. What is the difference between the two parties? “When salt looses its flavor, it is no longer good for anything, except to be thrown out and trampled by men.”

Except that bit about renouncing foreign allegiance/citizenship is now ignored by our government that has shrugged and permits dual citizenship even among immigrants.

And Islamists say it means nothing and that they don’t have to support any of America’s wars against Islamic nations.
