An alleged fight between a student and a substitute teacher at Palm Beach Lakes High School is under investigation after a student captured 17 seconds of the scuffle on a cell phone.
The video of the alleged brawl was posted on Facebook where many students shared and commented the clip titled, "Bol only at Palm Beach Lakes smh "
The clip begins with what appears as a substitute teacher and student standing nose-to-nose in the middle of a classroom. The alleged student is then shown shoving the alleged substitute teacher where then the instructor and teen are seen throwing punches. The video ends as the student runs out of the classroom.
"A teacher should, you know, stand up for himself, but not to go on ahead and you know. I'm speechless right now," said Darrel Phillips, a Palm Beach Lakes High senior.
The name of the substitute teacher is unknown, but many students like Phillips identified him as "Mr. Smith" or "Smitty."
Phillips and his friend Brandon Rucker have mixed feeling about the video. They do not know what lead up to the violence and feel both parties are to blame.
"It's just like, to see a kid, someone like that step up to someone. First of all you should have respect for that man. I know I would have," said Rucker.
When asked about what allegedly took place inside the grounds at Palm Beach Lakes High, the Palm Beach County School District offering no information about what was captured on a cell phone video. A spokesperson, Nat Harrington, did email WPTV NewsChannel 5 a statement:
"The incident is being investigated, and no report or further comment is available since the investigation remains open."
NewsChannel 5 did confirm the substitute teacher was terminated and the student was expelled. Harrington would not confirm the name of the substitute teacher.
An email also confirmed the incident happened on November 8, 2012 at around 2:00 p.m.
A district spokesperson said staff at Palm Beach Lakes High were alerted to the situation after an emergency call button was pressed.
Many students outside of Palm Beach Lakes High remember a substitute teach who helped them, who they described as "nice."
"He was the type, you got along with him. I mean, I don't understand why somebody wouldn't get along with him," said Phillips.
NewsChannel 5 also spoke with parents as they were picking up their students on Monday. Many had no clue about the fight and were frustrated the school did not notify them.
It’s a good thing the teacher was black. Had he been white, Je$$e and Al would be there in front of the cameras by morning claiming it was a hate crime and the teacher is a racist.
He looks white to me. Student shoved FIRST and threw FIRST punch. Throw that dumbazz ‘student’ in jail and see how tough he is. He’s probably been held back 5 years in a row so he’s a bit uptight about it. Now 6th year.
We’ve have fight club and bum fights and now sub fights?
He looks like a black man with light shining off his bald head. If Je$$e is there by morning we’ll know he was white.
And THIS is a prime example of why public schools get a bad rap. Unlike private schools, public schools have no choice but to accept this type of trash - our laws force schools to educate him until he reaches an “age” where the government decides it is now “acceptable” to boot him out. One student like this can and does cost teachers their jobs and they can and do make learning in the classroom a challenge for the teachers. Many of the problems associated with the schools are, instead, problems such as this thug who are created by government policies and then the schools and classmates are stuck with him. If Obama is worried about “bullying” then he should support policies that punish this type of thug instead of enabling him.
The teacher had every right to knock out that little bastard. HE should have cold cocked him and knocked his teeth out. The student should be arrested and charged with assault and intent to commit bodily harm. Permanent expulsion is in order and jail time should be required, Where are this turds parents? How did they raise this little bastard? Animals being animals again.
Times have changed, nobody in my day would have even talked back to any of our teachers......Unfortunately this teacher is going to be disciplined and the kid will likely only get a suspension...(since he probably doesn’t want to be in school anyway, it’s actually a reward)
I could post an intelligent comment about Darrel Phillips' job prospects following his upcoming graduation, but instead, I'll just go on ahead and you know.
Yup. I went through that crap for an entire school year. Every day the class was interrupted by what was obviously a “troubled youth” who engaged the teacher in a fist fight. Every day. The education of 30 other students suffered because a federal law precluded the school system from removing the jerk from the classroom. Expulsion is expensive. Federal law requires the local school system to pick up the tab for educating feral children in private facilities.
The student pushed and swung at the much larger teacher. IMHO, the teacher had every right to swing/hit back. Think of it as a learning moment: the student needs to understand that his puny little self will get the snot knocked out of him because of his attitude, disrespect, and lack of human decorum. Swing at a much larger person and uh...you will get hurt.
I ‘volunteered’ to assist in Remedial English for Inner City Seniors (HS) and when being interviewed everything went fine till it came to the dress code and I said I always wore a jacket.
When told there was no need to be so formal, they preferred a more casual approach - to relax the children - and I said that all my good holsters were shoulder type and I knew they wouldn’t want me carrying on my hip.
They never did call back.....
Like hockey, teachers should have their own enforcers. Maybe the wrestling coach, football coach or school disciplinarian (if they even have one).
Touch a teacher? Get your ass kicked.
Gotta NetFlix “The Substitute” and its sequels tonight.
The teachers unions chickens have been coming home to roost for some time now. The losers are....everyone.
Lesson to adults in similar situations:
Stand your ground and do not charge!
First, because you must be seen as defending, not escalating.
Second, because you’re not going catch or out maneuver the kid, while you’re advancing.
Best is to stand, deflect, redirect, and wait for the opening.
There are always certain students in a class that believe their only purpose in life is to see how far they can hassle a teacher till they push them over the edge.
Then they blame it all on the teacher!
*** Every day the class was interrupted by what was obviously a troubled youth who engaged the teacher in a fist fight.****
I met an elderly woman teacher fifty years ago, and she told me of an incident at a Texas high school where she was brought in to teach.
The last teacher had quit because of the toughs in class. When she walked into the class, she told the class...
“I’ve heard there are some of you who don’t like teachers.”
She then went over and picked up a piece of firewood, holding it as a club, she then said....
“I don’t want trouble, but if anyone wants to give me trouble, let’s get it out now!”
She never had a bit of trouble with that class.
Exactamundo. Like, you know.
