That was going to be my guess. The drought was pretty wide spread.
They pick them before they are ripe which means the sugar content is very low and they don’t have much taste. In some cases the apple varieties in stores are chosen because the look good and have a long shelf life rather than taste good. The Red Delicious is a perfect example. I go to apple orchards in Oak Glen here in Southern California for the best apples. If I can’t get there or they are no longer in season I’ge had good luck at Whole Foods. Another thing in the stores that are tasteless is tomatoes. Like apples they are picked long before they are ripe. I grow my own. Makes all the difference in the world.
I noticed my store bought apples seemed to go bad quickly this year. They usually last two weeks and retain freshness. Not this year

Apples have been bred for various qualities: uniform ripening; shelf life; color; resistance to bruising; and so on — but not for taste and smell. The remedy is to go to a health food store and buy organic heirloom apples. They are hard to find and pricey but worth it.

Best apple I ever had was fresh from an orchard in NC. It was huge, ugly, and delicious -- almost like eating ice cream in my hand. I've never had anything like it from a grocery store.
