The Last Scoops of a Vegan Ice Cream Shop
New York Times ^ | November 23, 2012 | Maggie Astor

On the night before Thanksgiving, people filled a small ice cream shop in the East Village.

Some had come to the shop, Stogo, because they had read the news on Twitter. Others heard it from the cashier, and their reactions were uniform: “No!”

Stogo, which makes organic, vegan, gluten-free ice cream, will close on Sunday, a few days shy of its fourth anniversary. It has struggled to pay rent for some time, but Hurricane Sandy made recovery impossible, said Junie Ishimori, one of the owners who helped start the business in December 2008.

“This is way more important than Twinkies,” one customer declared in reference to the bankruptcy of Hostess brands.

The store’s name is short for “soy to go,” though Stogo also uses coconut and hemp. The store’s owners were all vegan or lactose intolerant, Ms. Ishimori said, and Stogo stopped using gluten and peanuts about three years ago.

Irena Azovsky, 22, one of Stogo’s nine employees, said that the staff knew regular customers’ names and dietary restrictions, and that people went to the store “just to say hello.”

“It has a not-city vibe,” said Leah Evans, 24, another employee.

Ms. Ishimori would not say how much the store’s rent was, but it is hardly the only small business that has struggled to stay afloat in high-priced Manhattan neighborhoods.

Stogo, which is on Second Avenue, couldn’t pay October’s rent when it came due, but the month brought higher-than-expected sales. “We were starting to say, ‘O.K., we can probably pay this and that,’” Ms. Ishimori said. “Then Sandy hit.”

Don’t eat soy, unless it is fermented.

Organic, vegan, gluten free? What could possibly go wrong with that?

They couldn't sell enough vegan ice cream to stay afloat?

Maybe they should have started selling non-alcoholic wine too.

I thought it was illegal for businesses to close their doors!!? The government should make Ms Ishimori stay open and pay those workers!!!

Exactly.

That would be the leftist way. It’s not their fault she chose a high-rent neigborhood

These won’t be the only jobs lost at small companies because of Sandy. My own home had a foot of water in it, and I was out of work 2 weeks, so there are my bona fides. I’m back at work, but many won’t be, some not for a while, some jobs (like the ones in the story) will be gone forever.

I think veganism is silly, although not as silly as Manhattan commercial rents, but for me that’s not the take-away from this.

Some of the comments at the link are just hilarious. One gal talking about the abysmal life that cows lead. Good heavens. Doubt if I would have to worry about her wanting any of our homemade hand churned ice cream. Make it with eggs, vanilla, sugar and lots of half and half, and it isn’t cooked. Almost like my mom’s recipe except she used raw milk and cream from our own cows whose life, by the way, was anything by abysmal.

Cows have been bred to be dumber than the average Democrat, but never underestimate the Democrats!

Well, it is true that most people would be seriously unhappy if forced to live in pastures like cows. But that doesn't mean that cows are unhappy in the environment they are evolved to live in.

How can that stuff be called ice "cream" in Nanny Bloomberg's city? Or do his rules only apply to things people might enjoy, which doesn't include some soy, hemp and coconut congealment.

If everyone gave up dairy products then there would be no need for cows. So their aim is to make cows extinct? What convoluted thinking...

What is it with all the gluten-free stuff nowadays? Is there sudden uptick in gluten-allergies, or that health problem I can’t recall the name of?

Typical liberal. “Just to say hello” and then leave to get a real ice cream sundae from Baskin Robbins! Too damn funny! I really enjoy reading stories about lib businesses going out of biz.

Welch’s Grape Juice would be 10x less costly across the river in Joisey.
