What’s eating the sea butterfly? Carbon dioxide, study says
AFP via Google ^ | November 25, 2012 4:00 PM

Rising acidity is eating away the shells of tiny snails, known as “sea butterflies”, that live in the seas around Antarctica, leaving them vulnerable to predators and disease, scientists said Sunday.

The study presents rare evidence of living creatures suffering the results of ocean acidification caused by rising carbon dioxide levels from fossil fuel burning, the British Antarctic Survey said in a statement. …

Of course it is “rare” evidence, because it’s fabricated.

...and even if it weren’t...some life forms come and go...

It’s a good thing the increase in CO2 isn’t from human activity. Think of it. They they would blame increased ocean CO2 on burning fossil fuel or something. Whew! That was close!

Of course we have no idea if this is totally normal and has occurred untold numbers of times before, but let’s presume that it isn’t because that fits our enviro-misanthropic agenda.

Adapt or Die!

Sheesh, one would think the enviro-mentalists did not believe in the Darwinian Theroy they love to spout.

Wait. I thought CO2 in seawater provided part of the CO3 that, when bonded with the Calcium cation makes up Calcium Carbonate--the material found in many little sea critter shells.

The other 'biggies' are chitin and silica (silicon dioxide).

Maybe the oceans are suffering from a Calcium deficiency...

There are two kinds of sea butterflies. One has a shell. The other does not have a shell.

So which one are they talking about

I wonder if he knows what their shells are made of?

Bogus. The rising sea level due to the melting of the polar ice caps should be plenty to absorb any excess CO2. /S

Wait a minute. It is the “Butterfly Effect”, isn’t it?

If a sea butterfly loses its shell on the Antarctic seafloor a hurricane will happen in Jersey and Satan’s son is reelected POTUS and we all die horrible deaths....really horrible deaths...REALLY HORRIBLE DEATHS...

Wow, what a coincidence that a study is done on an Antarctic creature to determine if global warming is affecting it and guess what... GLOBAL WARMING IS KILLING IT!!!

Real shocker. I just wonder what the next grant gravy train is going to be.

Shh... That is the dirty little secrete no one is supposed to know. Most skeletal structure requires carbon, which can enter the oceans from dissolved CO2.

I don’t buy it a bit. The amount of acidification that a few one hundred-thousandths of a percent of CO2 would cause is so small as to be immeasurable.

Yes, and there is the buffering effect of the other dissolved compounds in the sea water, not the least of which being sodium chloride. And has this “rare” study started pretending that there is suddenly no plant/algal life in the sea that absorbs dissolved CO2?

I don’t buy it either. Sea water has a pH of between 7.5 and 8.4. That’s basic, not acidic. There’s nothing to this, but it keeps coming back again and again.

Bet the seas, especially locally, have been all over the place in terms of pH, with underwater volcanos and shifting plates.

The world can be dangerous for any life form sometimes. Most that once lived have died and turned into hydrocarbons for us to put in our SUVs.

OK Everybody on the count of three everyone hold their breath for 20 seconds!!! That will save them!!!

1 2 3 take a deep breath hold it, hold it, hold it, hold it. exhale. Now don’t you feel better that you saved the environment?

Then politicians stepped in to take up the slack...

BTW, there are more horses now in the US than there were at the turn of 1900.
