To Deirdre and Charles Wright, their 4-year-old Newfoundland named Rosie was a member of the family a big, hairy, doe-eyed friend and companion who "aided in their enjoyment of life, well-being, personal development and daily activities."
To the trio of Des Moines police officers who confronted the barking bear-of-a-dog in the driveway of the Wrights' home two years ago, she was something else entirely.
"He doesn't want me to get very close," one of the officers is heard saying on an audio recording from a patrol cruiser's dashboard camera, the deep bark of the dog in the background.
"He doesn't want to play," one officer is heard commenting. About a minute later, another officer says, "I'll shoot him. Let's just go shoot him," according to the lawsuit and dash-camera audio.

Yep, seems too many cops just LOOOOOOVE to shoot people’s dogs as an expression of their contempt for the communities they supposedly serve. They shoot the people, too, when they think they can get away with it.
Poor dog - dumb cops!
Good grief, cops can handle jerks and punks, get ‘sensitivity training’ on all sorts of human groups, but don’t know the simplest things about dogs? Or is it just a sadistic streak in some of them?
When I was Base Police @ NAS Fallon, NV in the Mid-80s the ONLY time I came even CLOSE to un-holstering my weapon was in Navy Housing when a BIG BLack Dog(someone’s pet/breed unknown) had scaled the backyard fence and was running the neighborhood. Anyway We (my partner and I) arrived on the scene and was trying to 1. find out where the dog came from and 2. put it back in the yard. I tried to call the dog and this dog(HE WAS HUGE) growled twice and I reached down and unfastened my retainer strap that held my weapon in the holster and PRAYED “Lord PLEASE don’t make me have to SHOOT this dog(1. The Paperwork for an expended US Navy Bullet in the Mid-80s was HORRENDOUS and 2. I did not want to have to kill somebody’s pet). Anyway he(or she) growled again and scaled the fence and got back into the yard(hopefully the right one). We issued the occupants a ticket for having their pet unsecured. I then breathed a sigh of releif.
I wonder if Lora Perry’s rights were violated as well?
This is just sad. I thought their job was to call animal control. I hope these 3 lose their jobs.
The “right thing” is for these two cops to vanish without a trace. Period
Yeah, funny how that works eh?
Now had you or I done this....
This article made me CRY!
Newfies are nothing but giant, sweet slobbery babies.
I’ve never seen a mean one, ever.
That poor family.
I’d be out for serious revenge if someone did this to either of my dogs.
I can see animal cruelty coming. You can be arrested in some places for shooting rats; in Ohio you need a permit to shoot rats in your own cellar.
If that were my dog criminal charges of any kind would be the least of these cop’s problems.
