A Maine fisherman's wife said he is trying to find a plastic tub of scallop organs he placed in a car he mistakenly thought belonged to a graduate student.
Michelle Mays of Southwest Harbor said her husband, Andy, spent six months collecting scallops and he stored the organs from the sea creatures in formaldehyde as part of a research project through Darling Marine Center, the University of Maine's research facility in Walpole, the Bangor (Maine) Daily News reported Thursday.
Mays said her husband was on his way to hand the tub of scallop guts over to a graduate student when he placed the collection in a car he mistakenly thought belonged to the student.
"He saw a vehicle with UMaine plates, put (the scallop guts) in, and walked inside expecting to meet the student, who he knows," Mays said. "When they weren't there, he went back outside and the car was gone."
Michelle Mays said she has been trying to track down the owner of the car while her husband is offshore fishing for lobster.
Mays said she is worried the scallop organs will end up in the trash and ruin six months of work.
"What we don't want is someone to say, 'What the hell is this doing in my car?' and throw it away," she said.
