At midnight on Thursday, the Stage Deli, a landmark New York institution that got its start 75 years ago, closed its doors.
Its a sad day for New York, said Paul Zolenge, who has owned the deli, on Seventh Avenue near 54th Street, with Steve Auerbach for 26 years. Weve been struggling to make it through these hard times.
Mr. Zolenge cited the cost of doing business in New York. The landlord erected scaffolding in front of the restaurant a year ago, he said, and even though it came down in September, we lost a whole year. The rent had gone up several times in recent years, Mr. Zolenge said, and with the lease ending in a few months, he and Mr. Auerbach were expecting another increase. We just couldnt afford to keep it going any more, he said.
The deli, known for its overstuffed sandwiches named for celebrities, usually in show business, was started by Max Asnas in 1937. Mr. Asnas sold it to Jimmy Richter, and Mr. Zolenge became involved through family connections. My father-in-law, who has been a silent partner, bought it in 1978, and after a few years, I took it over, he said.

Relax, Obama hasn’t finished.
Now, someone please tell me that Obama’s economy has “turned the corner” and we’re well on the way to recovery....
Or is it the case that four years later, it’s still “Bush’s fault”?
Who ON EARTH are the morons who voted to keep that utter and insuffereble, incompetemt *ssclown Obama in the White House!!!!!!!!
Greta Van Susterin had Sam Facchini, owner of the Las Vegas Metro Pizza on tonight. This business has been owned by his family for 32 years. Over the years, his business has never had a layoff. He told about his fears that he won’t be able to handle Obamacare’s health care costs and will have to resort to layoffs. Like all food service businesses, they are labor intensive and have small profit margins. With 200 employees, the bill would add about $300,000 per year to his costs.
Thanks alot Zer0. FUBO!
The moron takers.
After Obama has finished with NY, there’ll be a halal goat joint on every corner and camel dung for all.
You’ll get your delis, infidels.
Bloomberg didn’t like overstuffed sandwiches anyway.
Bloomie and Obama’s Fault.
It was a major Bloomberg scam last year.
Truth is, the landlord received a fine on the facade and had to restore it. The flaw was probably very minor and at the very top of the the building, something only a building inspector could see with a microscope. Almost every landlord in NYC was hit with this. The daily fines were outrageous. Even if the landlord tried to do everything very fast, the paper pushers took their time.
My mom was hit with this fine (as well as other buildings on her street)even though there was nothing wrong with her brownstone building. The inspector made up something. To prove the inspector wrong, she still had to put up the scaffold or pay the daily $1,000 fine until one is put up. She had to get a 150k loan, hire lawyers, architects, contractors and historians. Historians because Bloomberg all of a sudden decided that her area was a historic section. They also made her 5 story building into a 6 story building on paper. Different laws apply to 6 story buildings. It was insane.
For one year the entire building had a scaffold and covered with a tarp. No sunlight came in through the windows, it was impossible to rent apartments. Now the rents are used to pay back the loan and with the price of fuel nowadays, landlords are suffering. A domino effect is happening.
I'm very sorry The Stage has to close. Blame it on Bloomberg. It's his doing.
Sounds like an organized crime “protection” racket — only it’s legal.
I would be willing to bet Mr. Zolenge is a voting Democrat.
Doomberg will be happy...
So a business that was actually founded during the Great Depression could not survive the O-conomy. Hope and change indeed.
City agencies are out of control in NYC. They are constantly looking for money to scam out of business owners and landlords. Then come the unions trying to drive businesses under.
The Stage Deli was a bit of a tourist trap but it’s OUR tourist trap. I wonder when we will lose Katzes.
and Mittens would save us ha!
Oh, boo friggin’ hoo...
These people supported Obozo to a man in Manhattan and consistently vote for lib dims...they reap what they sow.
Why doesn’t a richie rich like David Geffen who just paid a gazillion dollars for an apartment there help these people out if it’s such a “landmark”...
Oh, that’s right...he’s busy stashing his dough so he won’t be paying the
1% ‘s tax rate....
Ate there once 20 years ago... They did have memorable sandwiches.
In those days, Brooklyn was thought of as the country!
And you know for a fact that the owners of the Stage Deli voted for Obama? You might be right but I don’t think you really know...
