A new device could stop over one million automobile accidents each year, its inventor claims.

Deer Deter is an automated electronic system designed to keep wild deer and other large animals from running into oncoming traffic in the dark of night. Using a combination of light and sound, it literally stops the animals in their tracks as cars pass by.

It's long been a custom in Maine for locals to feed the deer. You can drive the length and breadth of the state without seeing a single white tail, and wonder if there are *any* deer in the state. Yet there are places where they are yarded up in unusual [unhealthy] numbers to feed and survive the winter. Locals refuse to give up their custom and hence, in part, the controversy ....http://georgesoutdoornews.bangordailynews.com/2012/10/13/maine-woods/hearings-scheduled-on-controversial-deer-feeding-rules/

BOL! I can still laugh at this but my wife still gets mad.

A few years ago, before our deer fence was put in, one of my wife' friends felt sorry for my wife losing over 30 roses to our local deer.

This woman took my wife to local nursey and bought a beautiful rose and a big container for it. Then, she had the nursery deliver it and put on the deck outside our dining room.

My wife was estatic, and I told her be sure to keep the sliding glass door closed by the new rose on our patio. Because after feeding on her new rose, they might want to come the house to feed, rest and have a nature call.

As usual my wife told me that I was over reacting. That no deer would come up on our back deck. I shrugged and went into the family room to watch tv and read the local fishwrap.

In a few minutes I saw an Alpha buck with 7 antler points on each side, sneak by in our back yard heading for the new rose. I told my wife, that she needed to check on her new rose.

She ran from the kitchen to the dining room and saw the big Bambi chowing own on her new trophy rose. She started banging on the glass door and shouting at the deer. It continued to eat.

She asked if I was going to do anything, and I replied that would be over reacting on my part.

I'm omitting what was said to me as she ran past me and headed into our bedroom. In less than a minute she came back with my Ruger 357 and an instant load cylinder.

She said, "Load the damn thing for me and I will shoot it."

I explained to her that we had neigbors well with in range. I took the 357 and bullets away from her, and told her to go close the glass door. Then, I went to our bedroom and got the pellet gun that fired bb's and put a bb into the chamber and pumped it 7 times. Then, I opened the sliding glass door in our bedroom and had a clear line of so to the buck.

Then, I scoped in and tried an urological shot/procedure to neuter the buck. I fired and got a direct hit. It jumped and hit the closed door and bounced off and staggered into the back yard. While it was doing this, I reloaded and put another bb through one of its ears and off a horn. It shook its head and bounded out of the yard like an olympic high jumper.

A minute later, I asked my still simmering wife, "Well are you going to thank me?"

After a long hard glare from her, I said other deer would be back for what's left. Sure enough we had a couple of more uninvited 4 legged tick/flea carriers visit our deck for a rose bud salad that evening until I put a large heavy duty garbage over what was left of the rose tied it off at the bottom . The next day, she had our yard guy pack what was left of her new rose and give it to a friend with a fence to plant it and bring the container back. That rose is now beautiful and large in our friends fenced in yard.

Now, with our deer fence, my wife has a beautiful rose in the same container safe on the same deck.

She still doesn't think that this story is funny when I tell it to new acquaintances.

I love your story Dave! Similar situation here, when we lived next to a 100-acre wood that was teaming with deer. This new house we moved in to had [NB: past tense] some pretty nice landscaping....which included azalea bushes...the Bambis couldn't stay away from them...no matter [human hair, dried blood, urine, commercial sprays, burlap covers] would they stay away. It was non-stop 'til there was nothing left for them to eat. Buggers! ...and so bold about it!

“Bambis couldn’t stay away from them...no matter [human hair, dried blood, urine, commercial sprays, burlap covers] would they stay away. It was non-stop ‘til there was nothing left for them to eat. Buggers! ...and so bold about it!”

Like you we tried everything. From human hair to human urine, lion poop, coyote poop, Iris spring soap.

The last expensive attempt was the liquid fence. A very expensive liquid apparently with a lot of garlic. The deer must have had Italian blood/dna as they loved it. Our yard guy brought some 5 kelvan rating hot sauce. He didn’t want us to use it incase we got it on us. He added it to the Liquid Fence. Then the Deer with the Hispanic DNA chowed down.

Then, we added sour milk, and that didn’t work. Next rotten eggs which didn’t work. The only critters repelled were us due to the horrible aroma. So I washed the stuff off and into the ground. We caught some deer chewing on the what used to be the top soil before our chemical witches’s brew was added.

Nothing worked. Ca Fish and Game understands that now. If deer are eating a vineyard or other crop, F&G tells the owners to put up an 8’ high deer fence around the vineyard or crop area. If the deer jump over, then they can shoot them.

A couple of years ago, I was steelhead fishing and staying in a motel in a small town at the edge of town. Next to the motel, was a small farm and the owners had put up an expensive 8’ deer fence. I was sitting outside and watched the deer leap over the fence and into the crop to feed.

The owners came over and got my name, address and phone # to be witnesses for F&G. That worked and they had pro archers come in after we left with F&G’s blessings to harvest the deer.

As noted we need longer seasons and to make does legal to take. F&G is trying that in some counties with doe permits for the under 18 but licensed hunters. One of our younger relatives got drawn for a either sex hunt and got a doe. Does taste even better than the bucks.

“That’s a great story!”

My wife is finally starting to loosen up when I tell this story. Now, she says she didn’t bring out my Ruger. I know better.

We know a lot of people including women who have bought the Gamo pellet rifles with the sound muffler on them. Their love of Bambi decreases over time. Also, we have had a fairly high incidence of lime disease due to these tick infected 4 hooved rats.

Maybe we can get an enviral semi green loan to print/publish and dump the books. That book might be more successful and helpful than Chevy's Volt.

Two years ago right before we built our fence, on a Saturday morning, we went to our nursery to get more plants/aka food for the deer. Several of the local master gardners were there with displays.

They asked if we needed help, and my wife mentioned our deer problem. Suddenly, all of the experts came forward with all their solutions. My wife calmly responded to each so called solution, stating calmly, "That didn't work!"

After minutes of this, the senior master gardner lady in her mid 80's came up and held my wife's hands, looked her in her eyes, and in a loud voice said, "Honey, just shoot the damn things!"

A few months later we put up our deer detainer/fence.

“Allow more doe permits and drop the population and that will reduce the number of accidents more effectively.”

What? And deprive wolves and coyotes of their prey?

One of the former Bambi lovers on our cul de sac did the same thing with some expensive roses. She didn’t want to hurt the dear deer if they tried to get over a fence to her roses.

Recently, she wanted the name of our yard guy to install deer proof metal fences like ours. A neighbor to the west of us in another home owners assoc., replicated our fence. This morning his neighbor just south of him took advantage of our wet and soggy fields after days of rain. This morning, he had some amigos out driving 10’ metal fence posts 2’ into the ground and plans to have a deer fence in by next week.

A new bambi lover in between all of the new fences and ours said he and his wife refuse to block nature. I told him fine. His neighbor just south of him, the former bambi lover, felt like he did for about 4 years.

The bucks in our area, the past two ruts have been very aggressive towards some of the bambi lover neighbors. This week, a bigger than normal doe has been chasing the other does out of our area. Apparently, she is claiming the area for her upcoming new bambi fawns. She has twins every year and is a terrible mother. All of her fawns have fallen to coyotes or been hit by cars trying to follow her.

BOL! One of our younger relatives was hunting on ranches in Texas last week. He got 2 deer, 2 pig/hogs and a wild turkey. He called and told us not stock up on a lot of meat in the next couple of months.

Sounds like we will have Bambi back straps, wild pig ham/country bacon/sausage and breast of wild turkey for Christmas dinner instead of prime rib. Maybe he or his daughter can get a couple Canadian geese to donate their breasts for the feast.

His brother was a chef for a couple of decades, and all of the restuarants he cheffed at had some type of game on their menus. Besides knowing how to prepare the entrees in a superb manner, he will starting to fix, cook and freeze great side dishes this weekend.

About 20 years ago the same son/chef was preparing an early Christmas dinner with Bambi back straps from a deer I had harvested along with some wild duck/geese breasts and the hunter/fisher brother pulled up in the driveway with a big sturgeon still flopping in his truck bed.

The chef immediately went out and harvested a nice strugeon steak for everyone. Then, we fired up two big Webers to grill the Surf and Turf and breasts. I thought that we might have to call in the EMT's for the guys and my MIL for eating too much too fast. Everyone survived, and my MIL talked about that dinner until she passed.
