this was my first thought too. the limited info about thr plot says the enemy comes from within the federation or starfleet, that made me remember this guys’ powers.

People spent 40 years creating the Star Trek universe. Then with a cheap plot device the makers of the last movie just wiped it out. Poof. New Star Trek Universe. We start over from scratch.
I think it was disrespectful to the audience, and disrespectful to the whole genre.
(By this I don’t mean to imply that I actually care.)
