Free Republic | 12/07/2012 | greeneyes

Posted on 12/07/2012 11:18:15 AM PST by greeneyes

The Weekly Gardening Thread is a weekly gathering of folks that love soil, seeds and plants of all kinds. From complete newbies that are looking to start that first potted plant, to gardeners with some acreage, to Master Gardener level and beyond, we would love to hear from you.

This thread is non-political, although you will find that most here are conservative folks. No matter what, you won’t be flamed and the only dumb question is the one that isn’t asked.

It is impossible to hijack the Weekly Gardening Thread ... there is no telling where it will go and that is part of the fun and interest. Jump in and join us!

I guess it would depend on the weeds, how many how thick etc. Those onions will naturally form a clump which will just get bigger and bigger. My original clump is over 20 years old and I’ve never weeded it. If your soil is light and has good drainage they will grow like crazy. When I give away some I always tell people to put them in a place where they can go nuts and then your only job is to contain them.

Rita: I don’t understand your desire to denigrate this thread, and to ping JimRob to each reply. Jim Robinson has been gracious through the years to allow non-political threads to exist on here, posted by the same people that post or reply to the more political threads. He allows for religion threads to be posted, threads that sometimes attack his own church and his own church is flamed to the nth degree, on his own website. Also on here are weekly joke threads, football, baseball, NASCAR, F-1, music threads of all kinds, movie threads and on and on. Jim Robinson is well aware of what is on FR and he allows 99.9% of all threads to continue.

As far as monthly donors, I cannot say about others, but, yes, I am a monthly donor and I also bump each FReep-a-Thon: how about you? Are you a regular donor? Or do you ride for free?

I am thinking of committing to doing a weekly thread about a hobby interest of mine, but have not made a decision. I will ask JimRobinson’s permission before I do. Perhaps you, too, could do a weekly thread for people that like to complain about the useless non-political threads on FR and the people that post to them, maybe even get them Zotted.

I am off to see the Museum of Natural History with my lovely and wonderful wife today, so if you care to flame me, please excuse me for not replying until sometime in the late evening.

I am not going to call you any nasty names or anything like that; I have learned some restraint as I age. I hope that you have a great day today too, and don’t have to see any frivolous threads that offend you.

You can flick the stem near the flowers or tap on or just shake a larger main stem. The idea is to get the flowers vibrating slightly so they can self pollinate. Usually the wind or a breeze does this naturally when they are outside.

I have alot of old seed that I’ll never plant that’s taking room in my freezer, and I’d like to give it rather than throw it away.

Most if it is peppers, eggplant and gourds with some squash, a tomato, and various other varieties. As a said the seed is old and don’t know if it will germinate worth a darn, but being free it might be worth the gamble.

This is kind of an all or nothing thing, if one person would be willing to take everything off my hands then I’d be willing to pay the shipping to send it. First come first serve and if anyone is interested I’ll send you a list.

First off Rita, your opinion means zero. This is JimRob’s site not yours, so you neither own it or have any authority to police it. Everything posted here exists at his whim and his whim alone. I find your post abusive and highly obnoxious for no good reason, which means you are the one out of line here.

Being a very old school, hard nosed country boy, what you need is to go back to elementary school, and every time you open that acid mouth, you get a wrap across the teeth followed by some soap. I’d be happy to do that till you learn some manners, and it would not be fun.

At any rate, YOU are waisting bandwith with your two-year-old sign-on date self telling us all how we are wasting resources on a forum that you do not own or have permission to manage. So for the sake of us all, sit down, sit up straight, learn your place, and start acting like an adult.

Hey Tube, did you get all that rain that swept through that area?

Why yes...yes we did, we received a full month of rain in 5 or 6 days as a matter of fact and on top of that a faucet got left on and really flooded things!

I believe a time will come when folks will surely wish they knew how to grow their own food. I think many are just in denial, the stores are still stocked and they still have enough money to buy so they are not concerned. Not now...

Just a thought if you maybe want to try changing up what you are doing with the tomatoes .... I have used “Mike’s Tomato Soil” and found it to work very well.

Andre has a very popular radio program (”must” listening on a Saturday a.m. with a nice cup of coffee - gets the ‘gardening’ excitement going big time!) and his farm is an hour and a half over the mountains .... lovely place to visit.

Not the flowers. Anything else will do. I usually just flick the stems.

The tomato’s are in pots, but the vast majority of the peppers are in the ground in the greenhouse and the hoophouse. They all still need to be covered to avoid being nipped though.

When the Rita’s of the world show up I usually just have a beer or a glass of hard cider or some cranberry mead.

I taste tested my recent batch of cider yesterday. It got me kind of snookered!

It gets too hot here in the Hill Country for plants in pots. I've tried the clay pots, plastic pots, 5 gallon buckets, and hanging upside down planters. None of them worked as well as putting plants in a pile of fresh horse manure. BTW- those upside down planters really were a waste of time. The plants died of root rot if planted upside down, and the material deteriorates rapidly.

Mmmmm.mmmmm! Drool ;)
