Ray Briem dies at 82; all-night radio host in L.A.

Ray Briem, the longtime KABC-AM talk show host who ruled all-night radio for nearly three decades with his phone calls to the famous and the quirky and his opinionated banter slamming liberals, championing conservative causes and extolling the big-band music he loved, died Wednesday at his Malibu home. He was 82.

The cause was cancer, said his son Bryan.

Briem spent most of his life on the radio, reaching his largest audience as the host of a popular midnight-to-5 a.m. talk show on KABC from 1967 to 1994. During those 27 years he helped set the mold for what has become a major radio genre.

"We consider him one of the most important radio talk-show hosts of all time," said Michael Harrison, publisher of Talkers magazine, the main trade publication for the talk radio industry

RonC, while we’re talking about Briem and Putnam, we should also mention Terry Anderson. His show was more short lived than the other two men, but he had a message to get out there and he did a good job of doing it. I respected him a great deal too.

For those who don’t know, Terry was a Black man that truly got it. He had a great big heart and a great family, boys who loved him a lot. I miss him also.

I met Terry a couple of times - he was great on the air too... but there for all too little time. Terry turned the heads of many blacks around and brought many of them into the Republican Party.

George Putnam was what I’d call a first - but he often irritated me and other conservatives, yet he was a soul mate we always tuned in to listen to. And, once in a while he showed up at GOP meetings to speak!

He could be abrasive, no doubt about it. His heart was in the right place, and for his age he was running circles around me.

His string of presidential interviews was considerable. I believe it was 11, although my memory may be playing tricks on me.

He came from a different generation, one we are paying for losing.

Ray was a real gentleman. I miss Ray and George, and your calls. Time flies, life is short.

A sad day, today, all around.

George P in his eighties had the mental quickness of a 25 year old.

Ray was the first of a long line of conservative ‘talkers’

Yeah, that was back when a conservative “talker” was relegated to past midnight. During the day we had to listen to liberal Michael Jackson with his clipped accent. I remember his glee in jumping on the last-minute hit against Bruce Herschensohn’s senate campaign.

Where is Michael Jackson today?

Sad to hear of Ray's passing. I had listened to him on KABC from the late 60's onward.
He was truly Mr. Conservative and would frequently phone "T.A.S.S." (the Soviet Unions's former national news agency) early in the morning and have some great shoot-out discussions (freedom vs. communism) with the Russian agent.
Does anyone remember the Russians name?
Ray was also a private pilot in his spare time and was a good friend of the late, former Marine & tv-talk show host, Joe Pyne (also a private pilot).
Rest in peace Ray.

Yes, Michael Jackson was an arrogant, leftist, ahole, who thought his wit was so funny. It wasn’t.

And that accent? Real or phony?

I had completely forgotten about that liberal Michael (jacka**)Jackson

In March, 1989, KFI hired Rush Limbaugh and placed him opposite Michael Jacko**. Within a few months, Michael was history.

I didn’t hear Briem very often because I was usually asleep while he was broadcasting. But when I did, I especially enjoyed him when he crossed swords with lefties who would regularly call in such as Lefty Louie, Lefty Louise, Moscow Mary, and the Documentation Person, aka Doc. Louie, Mary and Doc also called George Putnam’s show during the afternoon.
