HARROLD, Texas In this tiny Texas town, children and their parents don't give much thought to safety at the community's lone school -- mostly because some of the teachers are carrying concealed weapons.
In remote Harrold, the nearest sheriff's office is 30 minutes away, and people tend to know -- and trust -- one another. So the school board voted to let teachers bring guns to school.

Anything that does away with the candy-assed “gun free zone” designation is good by me.
When’s the last time a person shot up a police station or a gun shop? We put armed guards in banks and on armored cars, school kids are far more precious. We should have armed guards in every school ; it would be a good job for retired cops and MPs
I guess advertisement is a double-edged sword - on the one hand you tell the bad guys, "This school is armed and dangerous... to you" but on the other hand you have pantywaist parents who would freak if they knew - until, of course, their kid was saved by the same armed teacher/staff member.
There is a problem with the idea. Are we going to trust Government Union Workers (aka - teachers) with this responsibility?
I support the idea, but the individual recommended to carry must be vetted. There are a lot of VERY BAD teachers. I could see them leaving weapons in their desks for kids to steal for instance. I would like to see it voluntary so that actual gun owners and users are the armed ones.
I just keep picturing the average TSA worker with a clumsily holstered .45 under a suit shirt walking with a limp because the weight on his right makes his back hurt.

INDIANAPOLIS (WISH) - Instead of paying a bill, a customer shot a Don’s Guns employee twice in the abdomen. The employee returned fire and killed the customer, according to Don Davis, owner of the gun shop.
No doubt there should be extensive screening & training, as was apparently done at this school.
The areas that have forced unionization of teachers generally also have forced unionization of police and firemen as well. Even if unionized, I don’t see a problem for someone who has proven they can abide by the laws of the land packing a firearm.
Granted, there are some teachers who should never be allowed near a firearm. Just as there are people in every profession who should never be trusted with a firearm. But to disarm every law abiding person because you can find a subset of that group that might be unsafe with a firearm has led us to this point. We gotta try something else.
I like the idea of private security (retired cops) or even active duty municipal cops. Why not hire extra cops to cover school duty...?
At least you'd have trained professionals at the doors...
Indeed a sign should be posted on school door.

You make a good point.
