We were working on the barking/clapping seal act but he just can’t get the whole flipper concept right.

[no fish for him]

The big difference is that when you tell the dog “off,” he jumps off the bed. I like having a dog who will sleep next to me, but it is at my bidding.

A 120lb dog who won’t follow commands and growls at his owner is no joke.

Check out the texts of William R. Koehler....THAT is dog training. W.Disney pretty much had his choice of dog and animal trainers/handlers and Mr. Koehler did it well. I will have to study/research your recomended so I can learn the new.

Our dog sleeps in our bed but will certainly get down when I tell her to, although she does sulk about it and give me stink eye while jumping down. She acts like I’ve really offended her/hurt her feelings; she’s quite obedient in all things though, so maybe she still knows I’m her better even though I let her in my bed?

I agree with most everything that's been posted about this. That's not funny, it's frightening. The fact that she posts it on the internet for the world to see indicates that she doesn't see any problem here. I hate to imagine how she may come to learn just what a problem she has created. Not good.

Now, this is cute...

That is a really cute video. Reminds me of when we would take our dog and young son (the age of the kid in the clip) and they would both run and play in the huge mud puddles.

The other parents HATED us as their kids would want to play in them, and whine to mommy when they couldn’t.

Not funny. Not cute. She’s confusing the damn dog. Dogs need things in black and white, like children. I’m crazy about dogs, but this could even be dangerous.

My cat just drapes himself over my legs and dares me to move.

I love the Mastiff too. They are dominant and pushy if you let them. She and the dog need training.

That dog looks to be young right no and is in a submissive position at this point which is perfect for training; but she won’t do it.

She’s made it into a game for the dog, note the wagging tail. The dog is rewarded for staying on the bed, growling and nipping with kisses and pats.

There is a way, from day one, to teach your dog who is boss. It works if you get your dog while it is still a puppy. Hold the puppy in your arms on his back. When ever the pup struggles to get free you hold it tight and don't let it turn over or escape. When the pup stops struggling you loosen your hold. Tighten your hold again when ever he struggles to escape. Do this several times a day and you are the alpha (bitch in my case). If you adopt an older dog I don't think I would try this. :)

After reading the thread, this CAT person realizes you’re right. Dogs and cats are very different, and I’m happy to allow the kittehs to sleep on the bed.

They do obey my voice commands with varying degrees of expertise because they have varying degrees of intelligence.

For example, they love to enter a freshly-opened door. I don’t want them to get stuck in a closet or a room we normally keep closed. I say “OUT” in a strong voice, but not loud, and Lucas Prince of Darkness and Miss Hissy Slashy are out of there like a shot. Little Shadow? Not so much. She needs to be herded out, mewling and protesting the whole way. They’re all pretty good with “get down,” too. And “Come on, boys!” is mess/treats call. They all come running for that first thing in the morning.

They get praised and pet for obeying. These particular three are not so food oriented as dogs, so treats work less well for training, but we get on fine.

I love that picture.

But neither of you looks all that serious about Odhinn’s punishment.

Too bad he got the ZOT, huh. It would have been really cool to have his input.

Too many people just don't understand that training and disciplining a dog is necessary for the happiness and well-being of the dog. They expect hierarchy and if you're not top dog they will be.

I don't mean harshness and beatings. A dog can be trained with reward and positive reinforcement. But, you're always in control when control matters. How could you take your dog out in public or on trips with you otherwise? They love to go, but they can't if their behavior doesn't permit it.

It's not cruel to train and discipline a dog, therefore, and it's not cute or funny to allow a dog to run the show, especially a very large one. They're beautiful, loving animals and my life wouldn't be the same without them. But, they need parameters and behavioral expectations in order to function as a member of the household, let alone among strangers.
