A man jumped in front of an oncoming uptown C local at Penn Station yesterday — but survived without a scratch by lying flat between the tracks as the train screeched to a halt over him, witnesses said.

Actually a pretty good technique if you get pushed on to the tracks by one of the 11,000 loonies that the ACLU insists have the right to be on the streets.

He may have survived without a scratch, but I’m guessing his shorts might not be in the greatest shape right about now.

Just sayin’, y’know?

After they get done with him in the courts he’ll wish he hadn’t changed his mind.

In DC there is room under the platforms for someone who falls or is pushed. That is if they have time to get under there.

I remember once a lady was drunk and fell under the train. We went under to look for her expecting to find blood and guts everywhere, as we crawled under the train we looked and here she came crawling toward us. The train had passed over her without touching her.

Wow, didn’t know that either. But you’re right, you have to get there fast, and not even try to climb out if a train is coming in.

If you are small, like grade school boy size, you can fit easily between the rails and the train will easily pass over you. It's really loud and scary tho.

Incredible comments, they’re crediting this “save” to Bloomie’s weight loss policies.

(sarcasm I hope)

but what about that whole 3rd rail thing?

The third rail is on the outside (could be either side though) of the main rails. It typically has a wood or other insulator covering, is mounted on insulated stand-offs and is energized at a nominal 600 volt d.c. in reference to the main rails. The pick-up mechanism on the train, a sort of paddle like device contacts this rail to pick up the power for the traction motors. There is minimal clearance between the main rail and the third rail, and minimal clearance under the pick-up device. If you were to fall and land between the main and third rail it would be a miracle if you did not get crispy fried..

In many stations and for portions of the right of way there is a gap between the ties of the main rails that provides a depression that in a best case scenario would allow for a person caught on the tracks for whatever reason to lie down in this depression with, again in best case scenario, sufficient room for the trainset to pass overhead without contacting the body.

I do not recommend testing the clearance using your own body.

You should be alright as long as you don’t pee on it.
