SALTY PEANUTS! I, like millions of other people enjoy snacking on peanuts from time to time. Blanched nuts,Glazed Almonds, Shelled Sunflower, Pumpkin, Walnut, and of course, the big mac, Macadamia too! Peanuts are cheap, nutritious, crunchy, noisy, aromatic and an overall addictively FUN type of food, don't you agree?
Well, don't look now, but somebody (uninvited) just walked in on our party, and they show no sign of leaving. For the last year or two it has become very difficult to find a bag of SALTED peanuts that tastes good, meaning that has enough salt to make it worth eating. I would swear that most the big companies have reduced the salt content on their products. Suddenly I buy a bag that says the product is salted, but only JUST BARELY. (No Like!!!!)
I will jump to yet another conclusion and say I know who is behind much of this revamping of the humble peanut, and her name rhymes with....Michelle!! You know, Michelle Obama, the unofficial, unelected Food Czar with mega-clout. I think some companies are afraid of of being Bloomberged, or ordered not to sell certain items to the public, for their own good, of course. A true NannyStater Zealot would sue any company to the point of bankruptcy if they don't quickly get their way. Maybe after a lot of us salty peanut shoppers just stop buying their spring-watered down, vitamin-rinsed up snack foods, the retailers will get the message, and start letting grown ups make their own decisions again. Or start selling salty peanuts from locked glass cabinets, as whats done with Simulac. No, I don'nt snack on Simulac.

There was a program on NPR about food manufacturers gradually reducing the salt in their foods to try to reduce salt consumption. They concluded that there is a limit where people stop buying the product.
So you are probably right. It is easy to add some salt to peanuts..other things are more difficult.
Totally agree about the taste of today’s “salted peanuts.”
Of course I eat them the correct way, shell and all.

Yeah, and it got rolling because the head czar decided to add picky taxes on every item having to do with paper.
I no longer buy Lays Potato Chips because they do not taste salted even if the bag says so.
The cheap store brands still have plenty of salt it seems.
Well, apparently Nabisco decided their saltine crackers didn’t need as much salt either and they now taste like cardboard.
We gave the rest of the three and three quarters sleeves of half salted crackers to our goats and are going to switch brands. Completely. No more Nabisco in my house. I don’t need your high priced a$$e$ to babysit me and decide what is good for me and my family.
And I second what you said about Lays. We had to check the back to see if I had accidentally bought the ‘lightly salted’ bag.
We switched chip brands as well.
You are right Saltine is not Saltine anymore and they are stale.
Speaking of nuts, if you like Macadamia nuts, and there is a Walgreen’s near you, check out their nut selection. I found that they have generic brand Macademias in a huge bag, for about a third the price you’d pay for the Mauna Loa brand, but just as good.
But I do agree that well salted Spanish peanuts are better, and hard to find.
Twenty years ago, you’d see a “Reduced Sodium” version of the product, clearly labeled, but the regular version was still available. Ten years ago, there was only the one version of the product, but at least they usually labelled it “Now with 30% less sodium” or something. Now, it’s just the low-sodium version, but the label gives you no clue. It’s not until you taste it that you find out you’ve gotten an inferior product.
Two things I can’t eat with “low sodium”: french fries and Campbell’s soup. Fries are too bland without salt, and nobody adds enough anymore. Campbell’s soup, well, I grew up eating that as a kid, and it doesn’t taste right to me unless it’s so salty I need to drink a gallon of water afterwards :)
Don’t buy the fine salt. For twenty or thirty bucks you can pick up a salt mill and just grind regular table salt yourself. It’s all the same stuff, NaCl, so you’re just paying extra for someone to grind it for you.
Spanish peanuts are the ONLY peanuts at Kroger that are not on sale. What’s up with that????
