'Toddlers Could Go Diaper-Free at 3 Months'
The Local ^ | 2 Jan 13

Swedish toddlers could be protected from urinary tract infections if their parents took a leaf out of Vietnam's potty training book and cut short the use of nappies, a Swedish research study infers.

Professor Anna-Lena Hellström at Sahlgrenska University Hospital in Gothenburg has previously studied the link between diapers and UTIs, more specifically how children who cannot completely empty their bladder run a higher risk of infection.

She has now turned her attention to potty training in Vietnam where toddlers as young as three months go diaper-free.

"Never in our wildest dreams did we imagine you could start that young," Hellström told Dagens Nyheter (DN) newspaper.

Hellström said she was not issuing any official recommendations to Swedish parents, but said they had the right to know that it is possible to start potty-training earlier.

Her two-year study of 47 children showed that Vietnamese parents use whistling to help their children go to the toilet.

"And once they are on the potty, the child will completely empty their bladder instead of weeing a bit now and then, which children with diapers tend to do," Hellström told DN.

Aren't 3 month olds infants, nor toddlers?

I’m remembering Homer Simpson suggesting letting Maggie run naked in the back yard and letting nature take its course.

i potty-trained my son when he was two y.o. in 7 hours... i was going to wait until he was 3, but we were going on a week-long camping trip, and i had 7 free hours, so i decided to give it a try... the night before i did this was the last time he had a diaper put on him... it worked! and i didn’t have to bother with changing diapers during our camping trip... nice...

I think babies could be trained fairly early. I always had my kids on a sleeping/eating schedule from day one. Heck we potty train puppies why shouldn’t we be able to potty train an infant? I see more and more kids that are over 3 still in diapers.

Three months old ???

My wife and I raised six children...all potty trained at different ages...NON were younger than two when fully trained...

Someone correct me if I am wrong, but I don't think 3 month old have the physical ability to control themselves...

In third-world environments, everyone goes all over the landscape, regardless of their age. If they want to reduce urinary tract infections in children, as well as std transmission among adults, circumcision is very useful.

I couldn't say for sure on that, but they're certainly not "toddlers." A lot of 3-month-old babies can't even roll over, much less get up and walk to the toilet.

As my mother used to say, regarding stories of children's being toilet-trained at very young ages, "They mean the mother is trained."

Baby girls would be more prone to UTIs as the urinary tract (urethra) is much shorter. It also is true of adults.

I have known a kid almost 5 in diapers. The mom was just too lazy to teach the kids plus she wanted to keep him a baby. The kids granny told me a kid can be trained at 2 if you really try.

Yes, they are infants, and at three months THEY are not trained, but their parents are.

One of my four boys simply did not want to train...I swear if I didn't make him at 3 years old, he would still be in diapers at 35...LOL

I think babies parents could be trained fairly early.

FIFY

It's more likely that the parent learns each infants signals for elimination at that age . . .not the other way around.

They still live in a big litter box. The moslems have taken it to a hole new level.
