Quaid's wife and dog were not injured. The Coast Guard would not comment on the identity of those involved in the incident, and Martinelli referred the matter to the Fire Department spokesman, who did not return a call from ABC News.

"The man, who was identified by the Richmond Mercury News as 59-year-old Charles Quaid, went into the water at Point Reyes National Seashore to try and help his wife and dog, according to officials."

That's the second sentence in the article. Did you even read it?

“Dumb & Dumber”?

What’s dumb, are posts that no one except the original poster can understand, because the excerpting is so brief, you can’t even figure out the context of the story.

If this is the kind of thing that upsets you, it may be that you have too much time on your hands.

There’s some kind of corrupt or malicious script on that Yahoo page. I gave the page awhile to load, then pulled the plug on the wretched thing.

California officials have identified the 59-year-old Richmond man who drowned while trying to save his wife and pet dog from a rogue wave that swept them out to sea as the three strolled along the beach.

According to authorities, Charles Quaid was taking a walk with his wife and dog at the Point Reyes National Seashore at around 12.30pm Tuesday when a large wave measuring 10-12 feet pulled the woman and family pet into the surf.

Quad's wife and the canine managed to get out of the water safely, but the 59-year-old man never made it back.

The issue isn’t the man dying, that’s sad. It’s the stupid reporting.

The rules here are to state the title as given from the source. Then make your comments or observations. You did not follow the rules.

Yes, you're right.

I owe an apology to the FR community for not making it clear that I was talking about the lousy journalism, not the tragedy that the Quaid family endured.

...this is the second Northern Cal incident this year where the dog someone is trying to rescue ends up swimming back to shore while the owner dies. In this case both wife and dog survive. As a rule of thumb, dog owners should never go into the ocean after their dog - the dog is stronger and probably smarter in these situations than you. Hopefully, this guy was going in after his wife.

Man Drowns Trying to Save Wife, Dog
By COLLEEN CURRY | Good Morning America

The man, who was identified by the Richmond Mercury News as 59-year-old Charles Quaid, went into the water at Point Reyes National Seashore to try and help his wife and dog, according to officials.

Quaid’s wife was caught in the wake of 10 to 12 foot waves that were crashing on the beach, which is particularly exposed to swell, Capt. Chris Martinelli of the Marin County Fire Department said today.

“As a rule of thumb, dog owners should never go into the ocean after their dog...”

That’s good advice. Northern California beaches are notorious for powerful rip tides that even the strongest swimmers cannot fight. This man got swept out 1/2 mile from shore. Victims often tire themselves and drown because they try to swim directly back to shore against the current. The proper thing to do is swim parallel to the beach until out of the current and then turn towards shore.

In this case, a big wave got these folks. Personally, I would never get in the ocean here; the water’s really cold and there are giant sharks out there cruising just beyond the breakers...burrr...definetly not Southern Cal.
