Chuck Todd, NBC.
QUESTION: Thank you, sir. As you know, Senate Democrats -- Harry Reid sent you a letter begging you, essentially, to take -- consider some sort of executive action on this debt ceiling issue. I know you've said you're not negotiating on it. Your administration has ruled out the various ideas that have been out there, the 14th Amendment, but just this morning, House -- one of the House Democratic leaders, Jim Clyburn, asked you to use the 14th Amendment and even said sometimes that's what it takes. He brought up the Emancipation Proclamation as saying they took executive action when Congress wouldn't act, and he compared the debt ceiling to that. So are you considering a Plan B? And if not, why not?
OBAMA: Well, Chuck, the issue here is whether or not America pays its bills. We are not a deadbeat nation. And so there's a very simple solution to this: Congress authorizes us to pay our bills.
Now, if the House and the Senate want to give me the authority so that they don't have to take these tough votes, if they want to put the responsibility on me to raise the debt ceiling, I'm happy to take it. Mitch McConnell, the Republican leader in the Senate, had a proposal like that last year. And I'm happy to accept it.
But if they want to keep this responsibility, then they need to go ahead and get it done. And, you know, there are no magic tricks here. There are no loopholes. There are no, you know, easy outs. This is a matter of Congress authorizes spending. They order me to spend. They tell me, you need to fund our Defense Department at such- and-such a level, you need to send out Social Security checks, you need to make sure that you are paying to care for our veterans. They lay all this out for me, and -- because they have the spending power. And so I am required by law to go ahead and pay these bills.
Insane.

Did Obama just threaten that he’s going to assume this power unto himself?
We are racing towards tyranny.
That is the way I see it.
Oh, HELL no!
He did and he knows no one will stop him.
Read that link.....spitting mad....
This was a DESPICABLE thing to say in light of the month anniversary of the Newtown tragedy, and the subsequent politicizing of it. Unfortunately the Kenyan will not be called on it.
So, he acknowledges the authority of the house, but suggests that their authority is up to him.
And if they misbehave or don’t do the right thing, he will take this “burden” on himself.
This is what you should expect from a non natural born Citizen. Ignore the Constitution and you get people like BaCrock usurping power. We can set things right or deal with the downfall of the US.
When would the Fourteenth usurp the spending authority of the HOR, in its entirity and forever, once actually accomplished and executed?
Did the Proclamation usurp the Constitutional duty and authority of one whole branch of the government?
Yet he is threatening not to pay them if the debt ceiling is not raised? He is already getting more than enough money to pay our bills. It's just that he's not getting enough to pay bills AND increase food stamp rolls, purchase Obamaphones, pay off mortgages of deadbeat homeowners, give handouts to multimillion dollar solar energy companies, etc. If he can't handle the responsibility of paying our bills first, then he needs to step aside and allow someone else to get it done.
If your goal is to destroy the country then go destroy the US dollar.
Once we default the dollar loses its value as the reserve currency. Once the dollar loses its value as the reserve currency of the world we become Germany in the 1930s.
It’s that simple.
We depend on the dollar’s status and are beholding to it.
Going into default now is bad. Raising the ceiling until no one buys bonds in a year or 2 is also bad.
Of course the ‘spending’ problem is Medicare. And NO ONE wants to deal with it. Medicare has been the hole in this sinking ship for a long, long time. AHCA made it worse. But it IS the problem. Medicare/AHCA is on-budget but grossly, grossly underfunded.
By 2017 spending by the HHS department tops $1.2T - driven by Medicare/AHCA. Social Security is planned only pay out $1T in 2017. But yet we pay only 1/4 in Medicare in payroll taxes than we pay in Social Security. See the problem? Its not that hard.
As a society we have grossly underfunded public healthcare. And were doing that well before 2008. The bill is getting worse every single day and it drives intolerable debt spending that will cause the Treasury department budget to top $1T in 2017.
So look at the numbers above.
In 2017 the top 3 budget items are:
HHS (Medicare/AHCA) - $1.2T
Treasury (debt interest - $1T
Social Security - $1T (but this is mostly off-budget and as of now still paid for and solvent. Emphasis on ‘as of now’)
Defense - $0.6T (this is a reduction from current spending. So the current plan already assume reduce defense spending)
Everything else - $0.7T (this is also a reduction from current spending levels. So reductions are already planned).
That’s it. That is the entire Federal budget in 2017.
Medicare is the problem. Medicare, medicare, medicare (made worse by AHCA). Defense - already planned to be cut in the plan. Other spend - also already planned to be cut in the plan. BTW the plan assumes REAL cuts - not the cut in growth cut actual reduction dollars.
Until Washington attacks this giant, gorging but apparently invisible elephant that is getting fatter and fatter and is (and has been) way underfunded this problem never, ever gets solved.

These games from DC are getting tiresome. Acknowledge the problem - Medicare/AHCA.
There is a concept of “negative freedom” vs. “positive freedom”, our constitution falls primarily in the “negative freedom” camp with positive freedoms left to the explorer and those that push the bounds of human creativity.
0bama, has already stated that he sees the constitution as a charter of “negative freedoms”, that is, the freedom “from the Gov’t”. He, in my view, has misinterpreted the concept of positive freedom to be one that includes “what” the Gov’t will or should do “for” the people.
He is bound by this idea that individuals NEED Gov’t. and are entitled to whatever the state can give them. This is his version of positive freedom.
Dollar destruction comes with additional side effects.
Virtually ALL the commodities necessary of everyday life, are traded in US Dollars.
Devaluation makes the US more competitive as an exporter, but the money we get in return buys a whole lot less than it did before. So, the inflation of wages and prices in the US will need to keep up with the cost of living.
This inflation or the cost everyday items; food, energy etc., is inevitable.
The real issue is the cost to finance this debt.
We are following Japan.
In Japan, they sell more adult diapers the those for infants.
The ponsi scheme has run it’s course.
Yeah, go ahead, everyone. Blah, blah, blah. But who is going to stop him? Not the Repubs; Boehner just wet his pants. The courts? Fine. 5-10 years to get the case before an Obama SCOTUS. That’ll help. The press? Don’t make me laugh. Gun owners? They’ll meekly turn them in to Obama’s “Civil Officer Corps.” No one will stop him unless he pushes too hard too soon. So far his welfare 80-IQs think he’s a god. I keep thinking of “The Marching Morons.”
You are completely correct.
And the list of 4th and 5th columns go on.
We need to UNDERMINE the opposition.
Appeal to a base emotional construct of their worldviews.
Make them uncertain.
Exploit the uncertainties that form their views.
Get them to think? For themselves?
This is the challenge.
There is NO conservative messenger that can do this.
The message needs to be discovered. This is like raising a child that won’t listen to you, but eventually finds out that what you have been saying is true all along.
You can’t tell them ANYTHING, they must find out for themselves.
We live in such a world that anyone can find solace in their views that allows them comfort among those peers.
The problem for true conservatives is not the message, it’s any and all of the messengers.
Meanwhile, Republican leaders sit with their thumb up their kiester and let Obama set the dialog of the debate.
Boehner should pass bill that balances the budget without increasing the debt ceiling and send it over to Harry and then do nothing. No deal cutting. Make the Senate Dems vote. Then go to conference.
While I agree, it won’t matter.
The press won’t play it.
This President has control of the narrative.
He is a very cleaver piece of sh*t.
He knows what will play and how it plays.
Before long the press will be attacking Republicans for not allowing this president to exercise his vision.
This is a battle of rationalization.
