I just got off the phone with the Mayor of my town. He is a normal, ranch raised guy, owns a couple of shotguns, a few rifles and half a dozen handguns. Doesn't want to see any more gun controls in Nevada or nationally. We discussed an idea of mine to see if he can get his cohorts to join him in supporting a group of unpaid civilians to volunteer their time to guard our local classrooms.
Military veterans who now hold a concealed carry permit would be eligible to volunteer. They would be required to train at the police range and exhibit their marksmanship in order to be selected. I suggested the city offer them a life insurance policy just in case any mishaps were to occur.
I visualize a bunch of retired grandfathers wanting to protect the local kids from harm. Maybe giving a day or two every week or month to insure nothing bad happens to them.
If you think the idea has merit why not call your Mayor and propose the same thing in your school district. No salaries or pensions, no health benefits or other costs to the taxpayers. Just neighbors looking out for their own communities.
That was my thought right after Beslan and I’ve held it ever since.
Good to see you B4. :)
Controlled access to the building.
Outer classroom walls (towards the hall, concrete or cement blocks).
Doors, SOLID CORE WOOD, with a wired glass safety pane and interior shutter door to cover it.
A very hefty bolt on the door, inside.
Absolute must have ---- intercom between office and classrooms. Possibly have a wireless mounted trouble station that dials 911 immediately.
First sign of trouble, teacher bolts door, shuts the shutter, and moves children to safest area in classroom away from door or hall walls.
One of our local school districts hired retired state troopers as armed guards. Plans were already underway to do so before Sandy Hook, but after Sandy Hook, those plans were implemented almost immediately. There were a few grumbles, but I hear most parents are now supportive.
You have an excellent idea. I hope people in your area will be sane enough to support it.
I think with the initiation of minimal armed school protection that the whackos will decide to try anywhere that remains a gun free zone. They don’t want to be shot or arrested before they can get the first shot fired so they will likely head for any unarmed groups.
IMO, the kids in Israel could use the type of protection you are suggesting but here, I don’t think we will need it. If sending your kids to school was that dangerous, mothers wouldn’t do it.
Good Idea. I hope the NRA establishes a training program for those who want to qualify and serve schools in this capacity.
To hell with Obama; he gets to keep his kids safe. We will do the same for ours.

He needs to get the City Manager, the city attorney and the city council on his side before he can take it to the school district. They are their own form of government here in Nevada and the mayor is just one man. Here’s to hoping and praying that he succeeds.
You have my prayers too for your success.
I agree about the path of least resistance. But I also don’t believe the basics of what I suggested are not that costly or extensive....door, shutter, door bolt....most outer hall walls are already concrete. Intercoms usually there....the wireless 911 station would be extra, though.....
If the nutjob doesn’t see the victims readily, he’ll move on where he might see them..
All the retired guys I know have to work full time after their 20. They usually work until they get SS. I don’t know many 60+yo that want to volunteer to walk around a school.
The best bet is to put out a job notice to hire veterans for that job, with the idea that they would eventually do more at the school, for more money, as an armed staffer.
This would give the school maximum flexibility, in that he or she could then take over another staff job as the employee currently in that job left or retired, while they retained their armed guard status.
How about a small panic room in each classroom too ?
All that would be nice....I was just trying to think of simple and cost-effective impediments to a rampaging killer. Doors, shutters, etc....most school hall walls have concrete walls anyway (except trailers).....
My only point is that if the killer can’t immediately see what he’s after, he’s likely to move elsewhere. That’s time that allow help to come.
There would have to be some way to insulate these volunteers from lawsuits, including harassment-types. No one is going to risk his financial future without one.
