A U.S. Marine recruit faces felony and misdemeanor chargers for jumping over two barbed-wire fences and running on the tarmac of San Diego’s airport. San Diego harbor police got word from the Lindbergh Tower that a man had run on the tarmac by Gate 6 in Terminal 1 at 6:20 a.m. Thursday.
He attempted to hide in a service vehicle that belongs to the janitorial department.
"He had quite a few cuts on him and at the time that we found him he had actually taken his pants off so he was in his boxer shorts and his Marine Corps T-shirt," said Harbor Police Lt John Forsythe.
In aerials from NBC 7 San Diego news helicopter, the white van could be seen parked in front of a Southwest airliner connected to the gate. The vehicle was surrounded by airport maintenance vehicles.
Military police were called because the suspect was a 22-year-old Marine recruit from the nearby Marine Corps Recruit Depot. The unidentified man arrived to the training center from San Rafael Jan. 14 officials said.
"Everything we said to him it was: 'Yes sir! Yes sir! 'That was all he pretty much said to us," Forsythe said. "It took us a while to get his name and everything else like that."
Flights were not affected according to airport officials. The incident posed no threat to passengers or the public officials said.
But the breach of security was on a topic of conversation for many passengers inside the terminal.
"What are you running out there for?! What is calling you to the actual runway to make you want to go out there? And it's terrifying just knowing somebody would want to do that," said air traveler Mo Owens.
"I think that probably the security at the airport is very good," passenger Tom Solari said. "I feel comfortable. I'm not worried at all."
The suspect was transported to the Naval Medical Center San Diego in Balboa Park via ambulance with a military police vehicle following close behind.
The unidentified recruit reported to MCRD just three days ago and was in the initial processing phase. He had not begun recruit training military officials said. Refresh this page for new details in this developing story.

eyep...it’s one of the reason that current gang members are rampant in the military...latest article I read had estimate over 2,500 gang members with loyalty to the gang...thus we have massive thief and military training being used by gangs in the hood....

doorgunner, I was in Navy boot camp in Orlando. We hung our clothes out to dry on the roof of the barracks which were located beside a major street. One of the guys lived just down the street. He could watch his girlfriend coming and going from his parents’ house. He said he wished he’d have gone to San Diego or Great Lakes.
On weekends, our DIs would sometimes take us for a run out along that fence bordering NTC, so we could see the swabbies lounging around while we sweated.
Of course, many ribald cadences would soon ring out along with shouting, the DIs seemed well versed at this game. At least once some navy NCO came running and shouting demanding to know which platoon we were. No sense of humor I guess.
Who was the fool that set up MCRD next to NTC? Even at Ft Irwin they learned not to have the Marines and army training at the same time.
NTC SD was/is next to MCRD. I remember wistfully watching the jets fly over.

lol, I don't know if they do that anymore. My buddy at Geiger ITS was in the Marines because he shot the guy who raped his girlfriend. The judge offered him 5 years in prison or join the Marines.
Yeah, seeing those planes, headed home while we were face-down in the sand was both demoralizing and motivating. It motivated us to get through boot camp as quickly as possible, no setbacks.
We also had a NTC recruit who thought your boot camp was too harsh and he jumped the fence, unfortunately into MCRD. He was caught and placed with our platoon for a day and a night. The next day he was asked if he wanted to go back or wanted to become a Marine. Guess which one he chose.
Yeah, our platoon “hosted” one of those guys. I went through about the same time that was portrayed in Full Metal Jacket. A lot of the first part of that movie brought back vivid images in my mind; especially my primary drill instructor SSgt Conticelli. When I first saw the movie I saw Conticelli in my mind instead of R. Lee Ermey.
Yeah, I remember those, but it wasn’t in the daylight.

I've never done BC, but I can't imagine doing it in Beaufort in the Summer.
On the general subject, we were partying with friends one July 4th a few years ago on a dock right next to the Beaufort hospital, when this guy comes running across the hospital lawn, down the rock seawall, and into the Beaufort River. Did I mention there are oyster beds in the shallows? Did I mention that his hands were handcuffed behind his back?
Right behind him are a Marine MP and a private security guard, who were NOT HAPPY they had to get all wet securing this guy. I think they dropped a radio into the water, too. This provided quite a spectacle for the group of us partying on the dock, some of whom were retired military. We're pretty sure the guy was a runaway Marine boot from PI, who would likely be getting the boot.

Well, I lucked out when I was drafted in January 1951 in the bad days of the Korean war. I mentioned on a questionnaire that I had some training in photography, so I was one of 3 out of some 8,000 in the induction cycle that got assigned directly to the 301st Signal Photo Company at Camp Gordon, GA. The Company CO more or less made us "day students" at the Basic company down the street. We did do the Basic stuff from 0800 to 1700, then returned to the 301st with our Class A passes, no inspections, etc. Before the 6 week basic schedule was done, I got pulled out and sent to an assignment in the "Scientific and Professional Personnel" program.
I never even received a set of dog tags.
One day on the drill field, the DI (who was himself a Hollywood cameraman from the Army Reserve) said "You people are so lucky to be in the Signal Corps. I don't see a man here that could make it in the Infantry!"
Heh, I took a couple of turns some 40+ years ago as a prisoner chaser, picking up some real dirtbags from the federal marshals to bring back. They were NEVER cooperative, always abusive; which must have been the reason why only the Sgt. driver of the vehicle was armed with a weapon. I always had the extreme urge to break in the truncheon though.
Had work to do.
