We had a Navy RTC San Diego jumper go over the wrong fence and IN to MCRD. They kept him for a while. It has been almost 43 years now, but as I recall parts of the Marine boot camp were visible from the Navy side. This served as a sort of inspiration to me in that, no matter how bad it seems here at least I'm not over there.

Spent 3 years at the MCAS in Beaufort. Did my NCO school at PI.
Humidity really wasn't that bad. The sand fleas were what was horrible.

Apparently not good Marine material. At least he ran before more taxpayer money was wasted on him.

Kind of funny, in a way. I remember during drill practice at MCRD in 1977 having a fantasy similar to what this guy did.
Anyone who's been to boot camp remembers the great lengths that some people took cuz they had a change of heart.

We also had a NTC recruit who thought your boot camp was too harsh and he jumped the fence, unfortunately into MCRD. That was one of our boot camp legends back in '68.

The guy I’m talking about actually was assigned to our platoon for a day, no legend. It was funny watching him get his backside ripped by our DI’s. We were near the end of the first phase, so they were on us every minute.

The legend when I first got to MCRD was the recruit who wrote home to his mother that the DI had punished another recruit by putting him in a Dempsey Dumpster and shot a flamethrower at him; that the mother had called her congressman and a big congressional investigation ensued.
Most of us didn’t believe that one.

so I was one of 3 out of some 8,000 in the induction cycle that got assigned directly to the 301st Signal Photo Company at Camp Gordon, GA. The Company CO more or less made us "day students" at the Basic company down the street.
Nothing wrong with that, everyone had a job to do.......
I went thru Army basic back in early 1969 and from all the conversations I've had with Marines entering at that time, the only difference in training was the personalities of our DI's.......Some were assholes and the others were real assholes.......and life at that time was a real bitch!
