A comic novel that imagines Adolf Hitler survived the Second World War is the surprise hit of Germany’s winter book season.
Er Ist Wieder Da (He’s Here Again) conceives that Hitler spent 66 years asleep in an open field in Berlin, then becomes something of a quizzical, harmless folk hero in the new millennium’s celebrity-driven media and cynical political machinery.
The debut novel by German journalist Timur Vermes has sold 250,000 copies of its initial 360,000 print run in Hitler’s homeland since it was published Jan. 18, dislodging Ken Follet’s Winter Of The World from the top of Germany’s bestsellers list.

The reason it’s so important to study Hitler’s rise to power is because it CAN happen here... knowing Hitler’s story lets you be on the lookout for a similar phenomenon occurring here someday... perhaps someday soon :-(

The left likes to paint conservatives as Hitler-like. The truth is that if you keep veering toward the left you will eventually arrive at the National Socialist positions. The demos are getting closer every day.

Rip Van Hitler? I’d think it’s far more likely that Hitler would return from the dead as a vampire than to have fallen asleep for 66 years in a field. And then, he’d probably want to make sure that all his victims’ blood is pure Aryan, handing them questionaires, perhaps.

Why not,they are all his acolytes,they use all his propaganda strategies and they have delivery methods Hitler and his henchmen could only dream of.

In all fairness, over time Hitler will be ‘rehabilitated’, as was Napoleon Bonaparte in France, where he is, at least popularly, now seen as a hero of France.
It took 150 years for the restoration of Napoleon from arch-villain, even antichrist, to reach this point. But I figure that, at least in Germany, Hitler will be rehabilitated by the 100th anniversary of his death.
Popular history writers will recount Hitler in context with German history, starting with the unification of Germany under von Bismarck. World War I will be seen as the last great conflict of kingdoms, though France was a republic, and the punitive armistice guaranteed the rise of either Nazism or communism in Germany.
Thus Hitler will be seen as contending against western powers that wanted Germany impoverished and agrarian; and the Soviets, who lusted for European vassal states to loot.
Then they will tout how Germany was able to overcome most of the West, and how had Germany been able to defeat the Soviet threat, the next 40 years of communist threat to the world could have been vanquished. As it was, it sped up the creation of the Cold War, with America taking Germany’s place as a bulwark against communism.
The Holocaust would be a minor footnote, not particularly unique in history, even in its industrial genocide nature, since that was not innovated by Germany, but elements thereof had been carried out in Mexico, Belgium Congo, the Ottoman Empire, the United States, and Russia, before Germany.
The bottom line is that, of course this is historical revisionism that whitewashes the truth. But that is its intent, and what the German people of 2045 will want to hear. So that is what “historical writers”, if not accredited historians, will write.
