(vANITY) Mossberg 590a1 and 3" slugs
ME!

Posted on 01/30/2013 4:57:43 PM PST by West Texas Chuck

I got me this here Mossberg 590a1 shotgun. Pretty cool shotgun, I already had a 500 so I figured having two with the same parts was wise. Then I took it out and put several typs of ammo through it and ran into something weird.

No, the barrel is smooth all the way out, no chokes.

My 590a1 with ghost ring sights has always worked fine but I’ve never put 3” slugs in it.

Good to know, I might have to go get some slugs.

Those sights are the reason I tried the slugs. Figgered I’d sight it in. I hated them and put a cheapo red dot on. I only use it for “plinking” plastic jugs, I keep the 500 hot for emergencies/bumps in the night.

Firearm ownership brings responsibilities non owners can’t understand. You already know you have to do the responsible thing. Good luck with it.

Yeah mine is for emergencies so its always loaded. With the tube full and 4 in the stock its got plenty. I have a few tactical 00 and 4 buck and then some full power 00 in it. Instead of slugs I keep the .45 handy.

Now that right there is funny, I don't care who you are.

I’ve put 3” slugs through both my spouse’s 590 and my 500 with no issues. The only fte issues have been with light target loads. If you don’t want to send the gun back to Mossberg, find a good local gunsmith.

That’s an old misconception.

I beg to differ, it is simple physics.

Three and four.

It’s done, I sent them an email asking for a return number.

Thanx all, great minds all.

I’m very good with this gun, and I’ve run into something similar.

first off, the extractors. There are two rods that sit on the sides of the body, they have curved ends to capture and divide the magazine pay-out.

if the magazine tube has been extended, the tube spring may not have been replaced. This too I have run into that prevented the next round from ejecting from the magazine into the loading cradle.

If you need specific descriptions, pictures or video please let me know. I would be happy to provide it.

I do not see the need for 3 inch slugs. The 2 3/4 inch are the same diameter and the hard cast have plenty of velocity and penetration. Where I like the 3 inch is buckshot. in #4 buck you can go from 24 pellets to 42 pellets. In 00-buck you go from 9 to 15 pellets.

Old wifes tale about cly choke only with slugs.

Then you are not familiar with
cleaning a barrel with a Jag.

If it is a fixed jag it will not pass.

Flexible jags will pass through chokes.

What do the magazine shell latches have to do with the ejecting the empty hull from the chamber after it is fired.

I would send it to Mossberg with a short list of what is wrong.

I bought a S&W auto pistol not too long ago which was missing a main component (the extractor). Hard to believe it got by quality control.

I will say dealing with the company was a real pleasure. They sent me a prepaid label and I got it back working perfectly within a week. Oddly enough it went to Maine instead of Springfield.

You have a defective shotgun. The 590a1 is chambered for 3 inch shells and the one I lost off the fishing boat shot 3 inch slugs like nobody’s business.
