(vANITY) Mossberg 590a1 and 3" slugs
ME!

Posted on 01/30/2013 4:57:43 PM PST by West Texas Chuck

I got me this here Mossberg 590a1 shotgun. Pretty cool shotgun, I already had a 500 so I figured having two with the same parts was wise. Then I took it out and put several typs of ammo through it and ran into something weird.

3" 00 Buck - no problem, a bit warm but it works.

3" #4 Buck - more of above.

3" 1-1/4oz slugs - WHOA MOMMA, no shoulder left and The Problem (described below).

2-3/4" anything - no problems, works like a champ.

The Problem - On every single 3" slug I put through it the bolt and slide flew back, left the hull in the chamber, and I had to turn it over to pour the empty out and then cycle it again to get the next round. The elevator was down like ready for the next round but the ejector didn't eject, so the next round was still in the magazine.

This is a "military-grade shotgun" and I would expect it to eat just about anything, but to mess up on the worst recoiling of my ammo puzzles me. I sent Mossy an email and they want me to send it in. Has worked fine on all the other ammo since then so I don't want to send it back, but this really perplexes me. Why this problem on that particular round?

Weird.

Ideas, witty comments, insults all welcome as usual.

Cartridge separator. Mossberg will send you shipping/authorization number. You will need that. Ships to Rio Grande Valley. Turn around time 30-60 days, normally.

Is the barrel stamped for 3” shells? If yes I’d try another brand. If the problem continues take it to a competent gunsmith. You may have a defective extractor.

Did you load the shells into the magazine and pump them into the chamber?

This may sound a little dumb, but are you sure those aren’t 3 1/2 inch slugs? Just a wild thought.

My first instinct would be to check the chamber. What you describe is what happens when you put 3” shells into a 2 3/4 chamber.

You can get away with it with shot or buckshot, but when you put in slugs, look out.

My model 88 with the pistol grip broke a bone in my hand with serious mag loads. I don't remember whether or not it ejected nicely, or whether I pumped another round in the chamber. I was blaspheming and turning the air blue at the time.

Big firearms, marginal results.

Personally, I'm ok with knowing that I'm gonna get hurt if I mash that bang switch, because the person on the other end will get hurt much worse, and it makes me mindful.

You need that serviced by a competent gunsmith, Mossberg or other. Your firearm should perform as flawlessly as possible and, in support of that, you need to know that you are doing everything right. A failure like this could lead to a greater failure when you can least afford it. Get it looked at.

Do you have a choke in the barrel ?

Only use a cylinder choke or a slug choke with a slug.

Good to know, I might have to go get some slugs.

Those sights are the reason I tried the slugs. Figgered I’d sight it in. I hated them and put a cheapo red dot on. I only use it for “plinking” plastic jugs, I keep the 500 hot for emergencies/bumps in the night.

Yeah mine is for emergencies so its always loaded. With the tube full and 4 in the stock its got plenty. I have a few tactical 00 and 4 buck and then some full power 00 in it. Instead of slugs I keep the .45 handy.

I’ve put 3” slugs through both my spouse’s 590 and my 500 with no issues. The only fte issues have been with light target loads. If you don’t want to send the gun back to Mossberg, find a good local gunsmith.

I’m very good with this gun, and I’ve run into something similar.

first off, the extractors. There are two rods that sit on the sides of the body, they have curved ends to capture and divide the magazine pay-out.

if the magazine tube has been extended, the tube spring may not have been replaced. This too I have run into that prevented the next round from ejecting from the magazine into the loading cradle.

If you need specific descriptions, pictures or video please let me know. I would be happy to provide it.

I do not see the need for 3 inch slugs. The 2 3/4 inch are the same diameter and the hard cast have plenty of velocity and penetration. Where I like the 3 inch is buckshot. in #4 buck you can go from 24 pellets to 42 pellets. In 00-buck you go from 9 to 15 pellets.

Old wifes tale about cly choke only with slugs.

Then you are not familiar with
cleaning a barrel with a Jag.

If it is a fixed jag it will not pass.

Flexible jags will pass through chokes.

What do the magazine shell latches have to do with the ejecting the empty hull from the chamber after it is fired.

I would send it to Mossberg with a short list of what is wrong.

I bought a S&W auto pistol not too long ago which was missing a main component (the extractor). Hard to believe it got by quality control.

I will say dealing with the company was a real pleasure. They sent me a prepaid label and I got it back working perfectly within a week. Oddly enough it went to Maine instead of Springfield.

You have a defective shotgun. The 590a1 is chambered for 3 inch shells and the one I lost off the fishing boat shot 3 inch slugs like nobody’s business.

This sounds more like a shooter induced malfuntion then a firearm induced malfuntion.

I think you need to get the terminology correct. Hulls get extracted from the chamber and ejected from the receiver

Is the hull being left in the chamber of the barrel. Or is the hull being partly extracted from the chamber but not being ejected from the receiver.

Then is the next round not coming out of the magazine onto the shell lifter so it can be placed into the barrel.

It sounds to me your get partial extraction and no ejection induce by the extra recoil of the 3 inch mag ammo. This is most likely caused by not holding onto the forend firmly.

Then because the side isn't being pull sharply all the way to the rear it dosen,t' have a chance to trip the shell latchs and allow the next round to leave the magazine.

so when you close the action and bring the forend back you are allowing the action to trip the shell latch's allowing the next shell to come out of the magazine.

I say we outlaw fishing boats. Do more firearms have to suffer, Mr. President. End this gun violence now!

This. I was pretty timid about the recoil. You describe the symptoms in spite of my difficulty with terminlogy. The empty was still in the receiver. The next round was still in the magazine.

Out in the West Texas town of El Paso
I fell in love with a Mexican squirrel
She was petite, with a dancer’s swift feet,
I loved her red hair and I gave her a whirl

Blacker than night were the eyes of Sciuridae,
Wicked and evil while casting a spell,
I loved her & wanted her, but I was damned hungry
Grabbed the Mossberg 500 and blew her to hell.

Is the brass high or low on the 3" ?

Are the shells commercially manufactured ?

If the brass is not properly sized
they will jam in the chamber.

I’ve seen full choke barrels that handled slugs just fine. There is no safety factor involved in shooting slugs in any modern barrel you have if the chamber length is correct.

Before you send it in try this make sure you have the shotgun properly mounted to your shoulder frimly but not to tight. Hold the forend firmly lean into the gun.

After the shot before you take it off your shoulder sharply work the side rear ward they are made to be worked sharply and hard you will not hurt it see what happens.

A good pump gunner does not remove the shotgun from his shoulder between shots.
