Budget cuts may shut down meatpackers -[via White House]

On Friday, the White House warned that federal spending cuts could force the US meat industry to shut down for two weeks or longer.

Spending cuts set to take effect on March 1 may lead to the two week furlough of every US meat and poultry inspector. Without inspectors, the industry would be shut down.

Meatpackers and processors are not allowed to ship beef, pork, lamb and poultry without an Agricultural Department inspection seal.

They also warned that the cuts could lead to effects on everyday life, while meatpackers said it would likely devastate the industry.

The "fiscal cliff" has remained unresolved, and has been delayed until March 1. With both sides disagreeing on it, many wonder if they will be able to set their differences aside and come together on a plan.

If they're unable to come to an agreement, the USDA's Food Safety and Inspection Service will have to furlough its employees. This would lead to the meat industry losing close to $10 billion in production.

I agree with GeronL.

The meat inspectors are not part of the military. How is the USDA getting cuts?

This is just like dealing with your local school district: If they don't get the budget money they want they get revenge by making cuts in the most painful ways.

This is shameful. And why doesn't the media point out that Obama could eliminate the education and energy departments and no one would notice?

“How did you shoot half a bear?”

With apologies to George and Gracie.

That was my thought, as well. The Marxists control the food supply.

About half of the automatic spending cuts are against civilian, non-military programs. There’s propaganda from all political sides on the issue, but nonpolitical, non-spending, non-global, truly private sector folks are laughing at it.

Yeah, yeah, we know. Government and its favored, government-linked business constituents will never cut spending on federal funding for local regulators, manhaters or weirdos. They’ll go on strike to allow their foreign communist conspirators to nuke us, starve us, etc.

They’ll spy on us, shoot us, read our minds, and so on. LOL! They tell us daily that it’s the end of the world. No economic activity means no revenues for them. They will be poor. The fascists/commies can kiss America’s feet after the bond market failures, repudiations, austerity measures, etc.

Real or not this time around; FDR did manage to almost destroy the meat industry during his reign of terror.

Socialists are all about completing unfinished business when it comes to their goals.

Exactly.

Instead of cutting back on administrative bloat and excess, the government idiots' first impulse is "let's cut recess"...
