Imagine if all those coded items you buy were strong enough to act as a magnet. At Christmas, my daughters steering wheel would be in the bag of her van.

We did that as kids...We learned to magnetize items by changing the alignment of the poles using another magnet.
Don't say that too loudly. A Chicago business may use the idea to get a $1B DOE grant.

Years ago...I had a very large, strong ship magnet....and it demagnetized my card.
That’s an old surveyors trick. There was a story attached to it but it’s been years....maybe occurred in the 1790’s when they were generally doing magnetic surveys.

The local Radio Shack had a magnet pad on their counter top to demagnetize the anti-theft devices imbedded in some products. It had a warning about don’t get credit cards too close.
But one day, I saw a customer hand his credit card to the clerk, and in that transaction, it passed near the pad.
Credit card did not work anymore. They both wondered what happened. I paid cash.

In the computer department, Hans L. would open this small wooden case, and remove a circular item. It was about the size of 4, stacked 50-cent pieces. It was transparent, with a dark section in the middle. He would rub it (magic?) then move it over the beginning sections of 1/2-inch magnetic computer tape.

And sure enough, with the right command the tape could be loaded and read!

The energy needed to make one big N and one big S on the other side it huge, but if you make smaller and smaller marnetic areas, it gets down to being easy and lends itself to mass production techniques.
How many poles per square inch is just a matter of the tooling. but it is far easier to just line things up in small series magnetic circuits that alternate across the piece of material.
The result is a magnetic sheet of iron oxide filled vinyl that can be used for refrigerator agnets or other items and is easy to fabricate in large quantities.

Magnetized too weakly PLUS the strip has an alternating pattern of North and South to it.
So teh strip would look like !i!ii!i!!i!!!i!i!iii if “!” represented north and “i” represented south.
The magnetic fields would have to be aligned the same way AND of a high enough strength.
