PITTSBURGH A 49-year-old man remains hospitalized Wednesday as he continues to recover from injuries he sustained in a fight with a pit bull that lasted several minutes.
According to police, officers were dispatched to Stoebner Way in Larimer just before 5 p.m. Tuesday for the report of a pit bull attacking the man.
When the officers arrived, they said they heard the victim screaming in pain and quickly went to the mans defense.

The woman said her son told her he fought with the dog for four to five minutes until he couldnt fight anymore. At that time, he laid down and did his best to cover his face.
The woman said the only good thing to come from the situation is that the dog wasnt able to bite her sons neck, which could have killed him.

I have been told, repeatedly, that attacks like this are rare.
“I have been told, repeatedly, that attacks like this are rare.”
And apparently such attacks perpetrated by dogs of other breeds are even more rare, or less likely to be reported.
Where is Larimer?
I rarely go north of Mt. Lebanon, so all those other areas are a mystery (well, except the Strip District - wheee!)

yeah right... My sister and or her dogs have been attacked 3 separate times by pitbulls in the past 5 years. However, she lives in El Paso where there is a high percentage of how shall we say thugs who think its a great thing to get 2 or 3 pits and train them to attack a cloth strung from a rope in their back yard. Then watch the dogs clamp down and thrash the towel.
Then when they get out they become a menace. Two jumped in to our backyard and started eating my sisters toy poodle. I was able to put one of them down but the other jumped the fence.
When I am back in El Paso I make sure I am always carrying...
if you believe other breed attacks are under-posted, by all means, post them. i for one would like to see them and be aware of them as well.
I fought off a pit bull a few years back in a very small passage. The saving grace was that I was carrying a suitcase. I recommend the highest denier ballistic nylon luggage you can afford for pit bull attacks. The luggage was unscathed, and more importantly, so was I!
Fortunately, the owner woke up and called her off within a minute. It was a very long minute as she lunged at me and tried to get over the suitcase to me.
Years later, we (dog and I) made our peace with each other, once sharing a recliner and watching the Dog Whisperer.
Sadly the entire breed has been demonized due to low class humans who continue to inbreed these poor animals to insure aggression. In the late 1800’s and early 1900’s these animals were the preffered family dog in America. Remember not so long ago when it was Dobermans and Rottweilers that had everyone scared to death. I don’t know the answer to the problem, but instead of killing and banning certain dogs maybe we should target certain people.
Part of my motivation for carrying (Walther PP .380) while on my walks is exactly this. One never knows when one (or more) of these beasts might get loose.
