The Pope cited his incapacity to adequately fulfill the ministry entrusted to me in todays world, subject to so many rapid changes. This was the same week the producers of Makers Mark announced they were lowering the alcohol content of their bourbon: Here was the leader of the Catholic church bemoaning his inability to adapt to a changing world. Has everyone forgotten their brand? Since when did the Catholic church agonize over its inability to respond to change? Not responding to change is what the church does best.
But then, on the heels of the Popes announcement another story broke, almost as though hed sought to get in front of it a story I like to believe is more likely to explain his hasty retirement: A team of Japanese scientists has announced the discovery of a sea slug that has a disposable penis.
Sea slugs are hermaphrodites. As human knowledge grows, Gods occasional whimsicality with sex organs is something the church has had to confront. An animal with both sets raises questions for a church so particular about gender roles. And given that Pope Benedict XVIs predecessor, John Paul II, took the position that animals have souls, the soul of a sea slug in a body possessed of two sets of sex organs might have been a worry to the pontiff.

Oh good grief.
i am not a fan of popes, but this is a massive fail at attempting to be funny.
Good Grief!!! If you had written this, I’m sure you’d’ve been zotted before the page reloaded! I can’t fathom that The Globe and Mail has so horribly lost any respectability. I’m pretty sure the author thinks she’s being funny, but I’m quite confident even Margaret Cho wouldn’t laugh.
Here go the tin foil hats again ...
Even as a non-Catholic, I find this disgusting.
I wasn't funny.
I got no joy from reading this.
the Catholic church does not need to "change" with the disgraceful world culture...
truth is truth, and it may not be pleasant, and it may not be easy, but its the truth...
besides, the minute the church "changes" for example, to accept homo marriage, is when the new change required will be polyandy or polygamy, or fathers marrying dtrs and brothers marrying sisters.....
Tabatha?
Holder people?
“...John Paul II, took the position that animals have souls....”
Really? Really? How is that biblical?
When human nature changes, that will be a change the Church considers worthy responding to.
Disposable penises? That means the sea slugs don’t need to ask their government for free condoms. And if they’re hermaphrodites, just tell
‘em to go screw themselves.
Oh please! What do you expect of the left? To act normal? This is to be expected.
I heard a CBS news break (radio) which basically said he resigned because of the gay blackmail scandal. It was disturbing bias, but what else is new?
Why did I click here.
The most stupid story I ever read-—partially.
All living things have souls. They just don’t have “rational souls” as we do. The word for soul in Latin is anima - hence, the word “animal”. In other words, everytime you use the word “animal” you’re acknowledging that they have souls.

The human soul is a terrible thing to waste, Tabatha.
