OS ANGELES (Reuters) - U.S. first lady Michelle Obama made a surprise and unprecedented appearance on Sunday's Oscars telecast when she presented the award for Best Picture, the first time a president or first lady has ever presented an Academy Award.
Appearing live on screen from the White House in Washington, almost 3,000 miles from the Oscars ceremony in Hollywood, Obama praised the work of the movie industry before announcing the Iran hostage drama "Argo" the Best Picture winner.
Wearing a silver evening dress, Obama said this year's nominated films had "made us laugh, made us weep and grip our armrests just a little bit tighter."

Those folks were White House Social Aides, who were already at the White House last night to manage the “State Dinner” for the Governors (who are in DC for their annual meeting). White House Social Aides are a small cadre of folks, about 40 or so, from all services. They do this thing on their own time, usually after their normal working hours. Their basic function is to welcome guests to the White House, mingle and execute the plan for many of the social functions from receptions to State Dinners. I used to be one in the two Reagan administrations.
So much of a surprise that the camera were ready, the officer wait staff was there, the Oscars cut to DC.
Yep, such a freakin’ surprise it was.
They certainly look like they benefitted from the ending of “Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell.”
As of tomorrow, it will be 50 straight years of missing the Oscars for me.

At least they finally stopped pretending that the "arts" media is not much else but a basic political propaganda tool for them, and that the youth is the prime target because they usually don't have enough information to form moral and economic political opinions, so they can be shaped by the media.
Why were taxpayers paying 10 people overtime to be a brocaded human backdrop while Michelle read from a card?
What was their job, there? What vital function were they performing that it was worth a couple thousand taxpayer dollars to keep them there late into the night?
so, since we already had ‘em all dressed up, we may as well treat them like stage props?

The hypocrisy of having a black 1st lady present the award for best picture when the category included the film Django Unchained is staggering even for the fascists in Hollywood.
I don’t believe Argo won, the Obama’s cant’t tell the truth.

Actually, I found it a bit odd too - as when I was there the WH legal folks stopped our attending the Kennedy Center Honors event and all other events that involved the President outside of the WH (such as Fords Theater events). That scene last night seemed “outside the WH” for me — and likely an inappropriate use of the Social Aides. We were not there to be deliberately “in the pictures”.
She said she wants Jay Leno’s job so perhaps this appearance is a resume builder.
