Word For The Day, Wednesday, February 27, 2013 --hysteresis

;

In order that we might all raise the level of discourse and expand our language abilities, here is the daily post of "Word for the Day".

hysteresis [his-tuh-ree-sis]

hear it pronounced

noun

1. the lag in response exhibited by a body in reacting to changes in the forces, especially magnetic forces, affecting it. Compare magnetic hysteresis.
2. the phenomenon exhibited by a system, often a ferromagnetic or imperfectly elastic material, in which the reaction of the system to changes is dependent upon its past reactions to change.

Origin: From the Greek term meaning "a coming short, a deficiency." Hysteresis, a term coined by Sir James Alfred Ewing, a Scottish physicist and engineer (1855-1935), refers to systems, organisms and fields that have memory. In other words, the consequences of an input are experienced with a certain lag time, or delay. One example is seen with iron: iron maintains some magnetization after it has been exposed to and removed from a magnetic field.

Investopedia explains 'Hysteresis'
In economics, hysteresis arises when a single disturbance affects the course of the economy. An example of hysteresis in economics is the delayed effects of unemployment. As unemployment increases, more people adjust to a lower standard of living. As they become accustomed to the lower standard of living, people may not be as determined to achieve the previously desired higher living standard. In addition, as more people become unemployed, it becomes more socially acceptable to be or remain unemployed. After the labor market returns to normal, some unemployed people may be disinterested in returning to the work force.

Rules: Everyone must leave a post using the Word for the Day in a sentence.
The sentence must, in some way, relate to the news of the day.

No, it didn’t. After she had her hysteresis, she found me with the 20 year old babysitter and went hysterious again. I asked “Can I get my money back from the first one?”

Those who cannot learn from hysteresis are doomed to repeat it.

So when my female sibling asked me what I knew about the study of economics from the Dawn of Time, I said- “Hysteresis?”

Smoking anything causes so much damage to your body, but Meth is just unreal - It appears that while crack seems to be the drug of choice in the ghetto, meth is the drug of choice in the white trash community. Does it seem that way to you as well?

Yep. Locally, we had a guy set fire to an apartment building while cooking meth in Binghamton. A guy arrested for selling meth in Wavery, now this in Newark Valley...it’s circling us.

I think meth is epidemic in upstate NY. I remember visiting my FIL in the hospital in Utica and there were obvious meth addicts all over—emaciated and toothless are the hallmarks.

At least cooking up your own meth takes more gumption than knocking off a pharmacy for oxy.

Oh, good God, what a fine bunch-that happens out here, too-it seemed like a meth lab was busted at least once a month, but the last one blew up about 3 months ago and there haven’t been any since. Remote areas do attract that kind of crime, unfortunately..

Do you get enough rain to grow the marijuana “ranches” that are so prevalent in the California wildernesses?

MJ farms are a recognized hazard down here, but not too frequently found, by the guys around here who search for buried civil war relics and trenches with their magnetic detectors. Bootleggers are apparently more often run across.

The boys in our Scout troop found an abandoned still up around Lake Allatoona on a March day a few years back while they were supposedly doing lake and beach cleanup duties .... Lots of looking around and goofing off, not much picking up seemed to be the day’s priorities. 8<)

Mine kept having 'em until we finally just got her a hysteresectomy. Been fairly calm and collected ever since.
