How to defend yourself and family in your own home. - Or any structure for that matter

Posted on 02/27/2013 9:42:04 AM PST by jongaltsr

Defenders tend to stand behind door openings..... Shoot waist high about 4 plus inches beyond the door frame. Lay in a couple of shots - 4 plus inches and 10 inches.

That will cover and girth of anyone in any stance.

Shooters may be either standing or crouched behind the door opening. This way (4 plus inches) will get the best chance of hitting them.

If you aim higher and they are crouched over you will miss.

If they are either crouched over OR standing you have a MUCH greater chance of hitting them. A shot to the head or a shot to the gut is going to stop them.

Have your children and wife (yes, and even you) laying flat on the floor so that bullets fly over your head.

Also have an escape route planned The second you enter the room. Including jumping through a widow.

To jump through a window you will probably get cut but you can survive. Better yet - insure that your body impacts the glass FLAT that will push most of the glass out of the frame and minimize the cuts your will receive.

A glass cut is better than a bullet in the back or in the head.

I’d recommend 8” from door opening. You have a double stud (sometimes more for lights, outlets, switches, etc. Your studs are typically 16” apart. If you aim between 8” and 12” you are more likely to find a hollow wall spot.

Of course this assumes worst case scenario in a load bearing wall. I know I’m splitting hairs, but trying to just barely miss the studs is not advisable. Fire 3 between them. Stop, listen, repeat, reload.

Yea, I’d go a full foot from the door frame edge. The normal stance for someone pondering entrance is to bend over toward the door with head extended.

I was taught to “know your target”. I would not feel comfortable shooting at a wall with a hidden person behind it and not knowing who I was shooting at — a perp who broke into the house or a half naked rape victim who broke in to use my phone.

I realize the perp is far more likely, but I just would not shoot at a target behind cover. I am the defender, not the assailant. He has to come to me. To do that he has to break concealment. He is free to wait behind concealment for the police to arrive after I’ve dialed 911.

I am only shooting when he breaks cover and approaches up the hall.

I think this is terrible advice unless you have seen the perp take cover and know he hasn’t completely fled (if his concealment leads to an exit, even a window he can open and climb through).

I think your advice is terrible. I would never follow it. I understand the mechanics that concealment is not cover and that if desperate, you could shoot right through concealment, but this is terrible advice. If the guy is laying down or has fled, you are sending rounds through your house to the outside.

If you shoot a neighbor kid who came in to your home, even for a bad reason, you aren’t going to feel good about it.

Great advice for combat.

Horrible advice for home defense.

maybe get a dog, it might save some issues down the road.

and yeah, never shoot if you cant see what you are shooting at, thats like rule three, after dont look down the barrel to see if the gun is loaded, that kind of rule.

Jehovah’s Witnesses don’t come in your house or even pass your door without a personal invitation. THAT is #1 on their list of NO NO’s.

I invite them in, then won’t let them leave till I am ready.

I really like it if it is a hot day and my AC is off.;-D

The book I read 45 years ago said the best defense was to break apart a pair of scissors and tape one blade to a broom handle.

It was published in 1968 during the anti-gun madness after the death of Bobby Kennedy.

I agree, it would be an awful way to discover a tipsy neighbor who got the wrong house.

What tactics do you recommend vs fire breathing tanks?

1. All firearms are always loaded.

2. Never let the muzzle point at anything you would not mind seeing a hole in.

3. Keep finger off trigger until ready to pull it.

4. Positively identify your target AND what is downfield.

Bladerunner violated number four. He should be charged with 1st degree murder.

breaking into my house at night gets you shot. period. it isn’t a bad assumption that a serious threat is present. busting down a strong door with very good locks isn’t an occurence one takes lightly or thinks ‘oh it must be my mistaken drunk neighbor’.

I got my first firearm 54 years ago when I was nine. To the best of my knowledge I’ve never pulled the trigger without knowing what I was shooting at. Shooting blindly through a wall at a target unknown is asinine; only a fool does so.
