One of the WORST spy spoofs was A MAN CALLED DAGGER.
http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0061946/
Another, whose name I have mercifully forgotten, was about a Russian “secret submarine” who sent agents to place a bomb on the US continental divide.
Agents from around the world, both men and women, gather at a dude ranch and try to stop the plot.
Excellent color, a few laughs, otherwise it was strictly drive in fare. I saw it at a drive in in 1966 or 1967.
Rush must be reading “Murder’s Row”. He talked about the first chapter yesterday. Fleming’s influences are all over the Matt Helm books, but so are Raymond Chandler’s. I think when it comes to Matt Helm himself, he’s more like Sam Spade than James Bond. Not just MH is American, but he lacks a refinement that is closer to Sam Spade.
Great stuff - I read them as a kid. I took one of Helm’s aphorisms to heart: “Always call them ‘sir’ - it greases the social skids and it doesn’t make them bulletproof.” BTT
Dean Martin f%%ced it up for Matt Helm books.
I would like to see them make new Matt Helm movies based on the novels and not the kitschy Matt Helm. of Dean Martin whereas the only thing the two have in common is alcohol.
Unfortunately Hollywood in not interested in making movies anymore it is all about shooting fish in a barrel.
In the movies (or at least The Ambushers) he used a Pentax camera. What about in the books?
I haven’t read enough to find out, I have started the first one. I was going to read Murder’s Row, but decided I better read them in order.
And being pc, Vince Flynn’s books and Daniel Silva books have assassins who hunt down jihad guys.
Hollywood ain’t touching that scenario.
